  1. Setting the Tone:Journal Writing What are the four types of propaganda techniques? Give details and an example of each one.

  2. Purpose What are you learning? To expose students to the different propaganda techniques used in advertisements. Why are you learning this? To read and understand ads placed in the newspaper

  3. Crafting the Lesson • Advertising: • is providing information • calling attention to a product or idea • making known something that you want to sell or promote a product, a service, or an idea. • Printed ads are found in newspapers and magazines. • Poster ads are placed in buses, subways, and trains. • Neon signs are scattered along downtown streets. • Billboards dot the landscape along our highways. • Commercials interrupt radio and television programming.

  4. Crafting the Lesson(me) (we) • When you read an ad, ask questions: • Who is the target audience? • What is the purpose of the ad? • How are graphics used in the ad? Fonts? Color? • Are there any propaganda techniques used in the presentation of the ad? • Am I paying attention to details? 2 Bandwagon 1 3 Testimonial Emotional Words

  5. Composing Meaning(Two) • You will be paired with another student. • Each of you will be given a worksheet with four ads and a list of questions. • Each of you will ask a question and your partner will use the ad to answer it. (vice versa)

  6. Composing Meaning (You) • You will be given the “Original Benjamin’s Calabash” ad. • You will use the ad to answer the questions.

  7. Reflection • What are advertisements? • Where do you see them?
