History • 1920’s – Alcatraz inmates planted hundreds of trees & shrubs • 1933 – Federal bureau of prisons took over Alcatraz - secretary of the warden cared for the garden • 1941 – secretary to the warden, convinced the warden to allow prisoners to manage the gardens - prisoners managed the garden beautifully. • 1963 – Alcatraz closed and the garden started deteriorating • 2003 – garden conservancy, golden gate national parks conservancy and national park service began to restore the garden (“The Gardens of Alcatraz”, 2014)
