  16. Land of Oas(Tara Oasului) • Is situeted on 30 miles northeast of Satu Mare . • Each spring village people and farmers in the Oas region gather on a hillside overlooking Huta-Certeze to celebrate (Sheep Counting) Sambra Oilor. This centuries-old traditional festival marks the time of the year when shepherds leave for the mountains with their sheep. To help them get through the lonely months ahead of them, they celebrate one last time with folk music, dances and a rich meal. Since 1970 the event has been transformed into a major folk festival.

  17. MaySimbra (or Sambra Oilor) is a rural folk festival held in parts of Romania, including Transylvania and Banat. In May people herd sheep to the mountains for summer grazing. But before they leave, on the morning of Simbra Oilor all the sheep are milked in order to estimate how much cheese each will produce. This cheese will then be paid throughout the summer to those who own the sheep. Afterwards, there is a community potluck feast. In some places a similar festival is held in the fall when the sheep are brought back down from the mountains.

  18. Merry Cemeteryin Sapanta,48 miles northeast of Satu Mare • The worldwide fame of Sapânta is due to the unique cemetery that has become an important tourist attraction. Some days the throngs of tourists that assault the cemetery with their cameras ready make one wonder if it really is possible to rest in peace here! The original character of the cemetery is first of all suggested by its name: Cimitirul Vesel that means The Merry Cemetery. The material used for the crosses is oak, which, after being properly cut and dried, is carved by hand., • The background colour is a distinctive vivid blue, called “Sapânta blue“. Then the scene and the geometrical and floral decorations of the borders are painted with vibrant colours, yellow, red, white and green. The crosses also feature geometric designs in symbolic colors: yellow for fertility (the subject had many children), red for passion, green for life, black for early death. The townsfolk’s ancestors considered death as a beginning, not the end. Therefore, the background is always blue, the color of hope and freedom.

  19. Mocăniţa Steam Train • When travelling with the Mocăniţa up the valley one should keep in mind that this is like a journey back in time: after leaving the Vişeu station there is no cell phone signal, and any contact with the modern times is lost. • “Wood” and “water” are two words that best define Maramureş. The railway runs along the Vaser River and is one of the last remaining steam rails still in active use in Europe, and the only one in Romania still used for hauling logs down from the mountains. Built after the First World War for the express task of transporting wood, it is still – surprisingly – used for the original purpose. • A stop for loading logs onto flat wagons. • Nowadays, in spite of its old age, the steam locomotives have been given one more task: that of transporting tourists. As this place is one of the few where one can ride along in a wagon pulled by steam power, every year the old Mocăniţa attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world, and offers them unforgettable railway trips.
