Intermodal Freight in Florida • Florida is a import/export nexus for the U.S. • In 2006: -Florida exported commodities from its ports with a value of $40 Billion . -Florida imported commodities into its ports with a value of $37 Billion. -Commercial vehicles moved 87.5% of all commodities to and from Florida ports.
Florida DOT Freight Program • Florida Strategic Intermodal System Plan -Linking hubs, corridors and connectors -Safe, Secure, Efficient, Reliable -Ties State funding to Projects • Compliance without Interruption • Exploring Technology ( ITS) to meet the challenge
Potential for an Integrated Roadside System Let’s look at Florida as an example of this concept….
Potential for an Integrated Roadside System (continued) The state currently operates 26 electronic screening sites. If deployed, the Smart Roadside concept, could expand this network of 26 sites to include….
Potential for an Integrated Roadside System (continued) 40 additional WIM sites
Potential for an Integrated Roadside System (continued) 14 seaports
Potential for an Integrated Roadside System (continued) 20 airports….and numerous other roadside facilities (i.e., electronic toll collection booths). What currently is a network of 26 connected sites could become a network of 100 integrated stations

POJAX-UCF CV Compliance Project Technology Deployment -Non intrusive Weight Measurement -Commercial Vehicle Verification (OCR) -vehicle identification -vehicle dimensioning -Data Acquisition, Warehousing and Sharing -Pre System Compliance -Test bed for other technologies
Project Model: OCR Due to the low travel speeds of this application, the research team believes it will be possible to utilize automated readout of DOT numbers 24/7
ProjectImpact A Remotely Operated Compliance Station provides cost savings and efficiency. Real time enforcement of out-of-compliance trucks. Revenue Compliance with Vehicle Type. Integration with Cargo Theft Recovery System. Demonstrate ITS for Homeland Security. Wireless Data Transmission to Enforcement and Freight Management Data Warehouse BOTTOM LINE Collecting and transmitting valuable data without stopping commerce!
Future Activities and Plan Continued Applied Research Engage more freight stakeholders in test deployments Work toward a more intermodal approach Policy and Resources Intermodal WEB Portal: Technologies, Warehousing, Forums, Government Objectives
Future Technology Deployments Multiple Lane Application (example: all lanes on I-95). Multiple stations feed/access data to one control center (expanded data warehousing) Use data for enforcement (paradigm shift). Driver and Truck Performance Data.
