Guiding Question What does it take to build a state, district, school and classroom culture where Co-Teaching can flourish?
State Definition Co-Teaching is a collaborative partnership between a generalist and a specialist who have shared accountability and ownership for planning and delivering instruction and assessment to all students within a classroom environment.
Maryland’s Co-Teaching Network • Collaborative Initiative Between General and Special Education • Tools and Resources Related Specifically to Implementing Co-Teaching and Ensuring Fidelity • Online Co-Teaching Community
A Consistent Approach • Statewide Framework: • Definition of Co-Teaching for Maryland • Direction for enhancing instruction by providing access for students with disabilities • Guidance for quality implementation • Support for strategic planning in the district, school and classroom for all learners
A Shared Ownership • Purpose • Vision Statement • Mission Statement • Co-Teaching Implementation Roles for: • State Department Administration • Central Office Administration • School-Based Administration • General and Special Educators
Promoting Five Approaches • One Teach-One Assist (used routinely in conjunction with other approaches) • Station Teaching (use frequently) • Parallel Teaching (use frequently) • Alternative Teaching (use sparingly) • Team Teaching (use frequently with the caveat that flexible grouping is not eliminated from practice)
