In this interactive classroom activity, students determine who has longer hair to represent magnets and electricity. They list their knowledge about electricity and magnetism and create a model of junk yard machines. They also explore electromagnets and test variables to create a stronger electromagnet.

With the person you’re sitting next to, decide who has longer hair! • Longer hair person = Magnets, Short hair person = Electricity • One student writes electricity and the other writes magnetism. • On my signal list one thing you know about the topic. • Switch and write another thing about the topic. Magnetism Electricity
Create a class list of what we know about electricity and magnetism. Class List

Create an electromagnet Using the following materials: Nail Wire Battery
62L Is the electromagnet a magnet? What is your evidence?
62 L How could you create a stronger electromagnet? Test one variable at a time
62 L/R How could you create a stronger electromagnet? Test one variable at a time...Example:

What is an electromagnet? Notes 62L/R temporary magnet made by wrapping a current-carrying wire around an iron core
62L/RHow do the number of coils affect the number of pins attracted to the electromagnet?
62L/RHow does the size of the current affect the number of pins attracted to the electromagnet?
What are two ways to make a stronger 62L/R electromagnet? - increase the number of coils -increase the amount of current
