PROMOTION STANDARD To be promoted to the next grade level: • Students must have an overall average of 70 or above for the year • Students must have an average of 70 or above in three of the four core academic areas: language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science.
WELCOME TO 7TH GRADE • One Elective More choices than 6th If you are identified GT English and Reading you get two electives • Athletics (5:45 a.m. practices) • Spanish - this is a two year program – begins in 7th and ends in 8th (not for HS credit until the second half is taken in 8th grade.)
Requesting Courses 7th • Each student will sign up for Language Arts (English/Reading), math, science, social studies, PE, one elective, and 2 alternate elective choices. • GT Reading and English – sign up for 2 electives and 2 alternate elective choices.

Requesting Courses 8th • Each student will sign up for one English, math, social studies, science, PE and two electives and two alternate electives • Reading and Language Arts are combined in 8th grade • Students currently enrolled in Pre AP Math, with an 80 average or better, are eligible for Algebra I (TBD after 5th six weeks) • Algebra (0211) This course will emphasize the study of linear functions. This course will use functions to represent, model, analyze, and interpret relationships in problem situations. Topics will include graphing, solving equations and equalities and systems of linear equations. Quadratic and nonlinear functions will be introduced. (Will take STAAR EOC exam – the score earned will be included as part of the individual course and cumulative score requirements for HS) They will also take 8th grade STAAR math. Students currently enrolled in academic math, with an A average, may opt to be tested for placement into Algebra I (date TBA)
Electives • Why Choose Two Alternate Electives? A class may be full A class may not fit into your schedule A class may not make the final schedule • Electives will not be changed after the first week of school.
Requesting Courses • If a student would like to try Pre-AP for the first time in science, social studies, language arts, they should have at least a 90 average in an academic course. • 7th Reading and English must be same level • If your child is currently making below an 80 in Pre-AP, KISD recommends that he/she take academic next year.
ATHLETICS • All students will sign up for P.E. unless playing football. Coaches will determine placement and notify the counselor’s office. • Sports offered are volleyball, football, basketball, track, and tennis. • Remember: UIL, “No Pass, No Play” in effect – any grade below a 70 will prevent playing (dependent upon progress reports and report cards)
7th ELECTIVES • Theatre Arts I J648– Students participate in several performance projects. Students work individually as well as in groups. • Theatre II J746 - (Prerequisite Theatre I) – Students develop individual acting techniques and have more design opportunities. Builds on Theatre I to prepare students for HS theatre • Band $50 fee • Choir $50 fee • Orchestra $50 fee • Career Portals/FCS $30 fee This course covers food preparation, basic sewing and clothing selection/repair, and child development education.
7th ELECTIVES • Art I – (J750) $30 fee This course is designed to study the visual arts of painting, sculpture and architecture. • Publications I - (application/training required – Feb. 5th during advisory) • Spanish 1A – this is a two year program – begins in 7th and ends in 8th (not for HS credit until the second half is taken in 8th grade.)

8th ELECTIVES – (No HS Credit) • Technology Applications – topics include instruction in computer software, word processing, multimedia, video production and graphic design. • Student Aide – school service opportunity in which students work in school offices or with teachers (teacher recommendation may be used to place aides)
8th Grade Elective HS Credit Courses • Accelerated Spanish (6310) - This course covers the same content in a one year time frame as covered in Spanish 1A and1B. • Prerequisite: Must be enrolled in PreAP language arts in 7th grade with 85 avg. • Co-requisite: Enrollment in 8th grade PreAP language arts • Spanish Speakers – should wait until HS to take Spanish for Spanish Speakers or take credit by exam test • Spanish IB (6311B) This course is an extension of the material covered in Spanish I J740 from 7th grade (1 HS credit) • Art 1 (7511) $30 fee Students develop a vocabulary for art, and the skill to graphically express their own inner ideas and attitudes. • Principles of Human Services (8353) $30 fee This course is designed to address a broad range of knowledge and skills related to personal development and management, promotion of strong families, and preparation of adult roles. • Concepts of Engineering & Technology (8619) $25 fee This course provides an overview of the various fields of science, technology, engineering, and math and their inter-relationships.
HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT COURSES • Grade earned for any high school credit course will be applied to GPA Mid term and final count for 15% of grade. • No course in junior high is weighted. A = 4 pts. B = 3 pts. C = 2 pts. D =1 pt. **5.0 electives are available at the high school** • If you do not exit a high school credit course before the end of the semester, the grade points WILL be applied. It cannot be removed even if you retake the course.
Helpful HS Info • 3 high school credits can be earned in junior high • Students need 26 credits to graduate in the current HS program • Highly recommend that all students take at least 1 HS credit class before leaving junior high
REMEMBER • Course sheets due Monday, February 10th • Need parent and student signature • Please turn in on time even if you have questions, plan to move, or are uncertain about courses. • Corrections/Changes can be made in May when verification sheets go home • Students will input selections online: 6th Grade –Tuesday, February 11 7th Grade – Wednesday, February 12
