Benefits of Wind Energy • Due to the fact that wind turbines don’t dirty the air or put out pollutants such as other energy sources do, there will inevitably be less acid rain and fewer greenhouse gas emissions. • Since wind energy is free, it provides a stable price for power production. • Wind is renewable and plentiful, therefore it won’t deplete our world’s natural resources. • COST : Wind energy benefits society. Because it is a clean energy source, wind energy reduces costs associated with air pollution—both healthcare and environmental costs. And, its low operating costs and short construction lead times mean it can provide low cost, clean energy quicker and more conveniently than traditional power plants.
Drawbacks • There are concerns over the noise produced by the rotor blades. • Cosmetic, visual, impacts. • Birds and bats having been killed by flying into the rotors. • The major challenge to using wind as a source of power is that it is not always available. There will be times when we need energy and it simply won’t be windy.
Drawbacks Continued • Since wind cannot be stored, it may not be available during the time of need. • Large cities are areas of electric power demand but turbines are usually located in remote locations far from those areas. • Wind may compete with other uses for the land and those alternatives may be more highly valued than wind.
Locations • Valleys, mountains and forests, or simply large sets of trees and fences are appropriate. • The site should be suitable for industrial development and wind turbines should be installed on large lots, with as few obstructions as possible. • The US is home to many of the world’s largest wind farms. The largest wind farm in the world is the Roscoe Wind Farm in Roscoe, Texas. It contains 627 turbines and provides 735.5 MW of power.
