Final Examination • The final exam will be held in Van Allen Hall at 2:15 P.M. on Tuesday, December 16th.
Classroom Assessment and Grading • Arnold the Average comic. • You will fill out a Spot form for this course. Will that be a formative or summative form of assessment? • How could I make such a SPOT form formative?
Formative and Summative Assessment • Formative: a general term for the type of testing used to guide planning and identify student needs. • Summative: a general term for the type of testing used to determine final assessment in a course.
Below are some brief descriptions of children, each of whom went home with a “D” on his/her report card in English. Read each description, and indicate whether you think the child should receive a “D”. • Joan is just not very bright. She tries hard, but barely has enough ability to get by in school. • Fred is bright enough, but he is lazy. He knows when he has done enough to earn a “D” and quits working.
Christina is bright, but she comes from a home in which English in not spoken. She barely earns a “D”, but should do much better when she learns English. • Jon is probably a “C” student in English, but he is such a discipline problem that his teacher is not inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt, so he receives a “D”.
Sue does “B” or “C” work in the English literature part of the course, but her composition is atrocious, so her marks average out to a “D”. • Dan does “A” or “B” work at school, but is absent so much of the time that he barely makes a “D”.
Amy is doing far below passing work in English, but she flunked the course last year, and the teacher sees no point in failing her more than once in the same course. What would you do?
