  2. Purpose of BANSEM Asset Mapping Inform and guide leaders on leveraging and optimizing BAN capabilities to enable creation of sustainable companies Critical step in building a strong entrepreneurial eco-system in Southeast Michigan

Objective of Asset Map Project • Provide a tool to identify gaps and overlaps in service activity and strategy • Inform recommendations of how to strengthen network • Leverage existing asset mapping efforts in State/region • Internal document for use by regional accelerator network – not a public tool

Regional Profile • Serves clients in all stages of startup business life cycle (Davies, 2009) • IT, Life science, Alternative energy, Manufacturing, Defense and Homeland security, Tech Services, Non-tech services*, and Creative arts* • Scalable high growth and micro-business models • Startup and established companies • Novice, intermediate, and advanced level entrepreneurs *TechTown only

BAN has high amounts of incubation, lab, and event lease space • Combined, over 200,000 sq-ft active space for use by companies • Affordable office space with business amenities • Wet/dry labs • Conference rooms • Event space *120,000 sq-ft Tech-Two (scheduled to be fully operational by 1Q2011)

BAN has a broad client base • 327 tenants • Approximately1,400 clients receiving education or acceleration support in a year • 68% through novice-based educational programming funded by NEI • 32% regional acceleration services and workshops • 966 members • At least 15,150 event attendees in 2009*

BANSEM Seed Investments • $17.32 Million reported as invested since 2007 • 339 companies, attracting $101 Million additional investment • IT, Life Science, Clean Energy areas of focus (primarily) • County & State Microloan programs, Incubator funds, and State Pre-Seed fund • Approximate Investment Ratio of 6:1
