What does a NIHR Fellowship provide? • Research and training award to support researchers focusing on people and patient-based clinical and applied health research. • Can be based at University (HEI) or NHS Trust • Open to any scientific discipline or sector (clinical and non-clinical) • Salary (at 100% NHS, 80% HEI) • Full Tuition fees (for PhD level) • Research costs (at 100% NHS, 80% HEI. HEI also receive specialist support and indirect costs e.g. estates costs at 80%) • Full Training and development costs • 3 years FT (4 or 5 years PT) DRF to CDF; 5 years for SRF • CDF and SRF levels can apply for Research Assistant post • Annual competition for all levels • Launch - Autumn Closing date - January

NIHR Fellowships Post-Doctoral Fellowship Doctoral Research Fellowship • Doctoral training award to individuals of outstanding potential, early in research career • To undertake a PhD • To increase research skills • Applicant: • Some previous research experience • Some outputs from research • Evidence of commitment to research career • If already registered PhD < 1 yr FT by start of Fellowship • Early post-doctoral training award • Outstanding potential as researchers • Develop postdoctoral research experience & skills • Increase independence Applicant: PhD/MD (or submitted) ≤ 3 yrs WTE postdoc research experience at application Research output (publications, grant applications) Clear commitment to research career

NIHR Fellowships Career Development Fellowship Senior Research Fellowship • Later postdoctoral award • Gain full research independence • Develop research capacity of self and others • Applicant: • PhD/MD and significant postdoctoral experience (≤ 7 yrs WTE postdoc research experience at application) • Significant research output • Evidence of increasing independence • Experience of developing research skills of others • Most senior NIHR Fellowship • 5 years ( aiming towards Chair) • Potential to become academic and research leader within award time Applicant: Significant postdoctoral experience Outstanding publication record Independence Leadership potential Record of research capacity development

NIHR Clinical Trials Fellowships Supports existing NIHR Trainees with an interest in, and experience of, working with clinical trials as part of their current training award who would benefit from further training within the setting of a Clinical Trials Unit. • Applicant: • Currently hold NIHR PDF, Clinical Lectureship, Clinician Scientist • Be involved in a clinical trial as part of training award • Have continued support from employing host organisation (HEI or NHS) for duration of CTF as will administer award. • CTU: based in England and in receipt of NIHR CTU Support Funding • Funding for salary costs (at 80% HEI, 100% NHS), indirect costs for HEI only (at 80%) and up to £5,000 to support CT training activities. • 6 months full-time, 8 or 10 months part-time

NIHR/CNO Clinical AcademicTraining Programme • Supports nurses, midwives and allied health professionals committed to developing a career which combines research and continued clinical practice. • Masters, doctoral, post-doctoral fellowships • NIHR/CSO Healthcare Science Research Fellowships • Supports individuals in NHS healthcare science workforce who wish to bridge clinical/service careers and research. • Proposed research must be of direct relevance to the NHS with potential to improve service and/or clinical outcomes. • Doctoral and post-doctoral fellowships

Do the references in text match • the list? • 4. Collaborations, training and support: • ● Have the appropriate multidisciplinary involvement in the research & supervisory team • ● Must have a clear career vision, training plan and support

Good Applications • Applications are assessed on: • Applicant • Research • Training and Development • Environment / Supervision • Value for Money • Common Weaknesses • 1) Failure to show that research addresses important areas for the NHS and will produce results that are likely to generate significant and quantifiable benefit for NHS patients within 5 years of the funding period. • 2) Research questions not clear; don’t show the relevance of the aims and objectives. Unrealistic or failure to justify budget and requested resources. • 3) Training programme too generic and not suited/specific to the project
