  1. Engaging a VARITEY of Students

  2. Which do you most identify with? From the lists below select 1 role from each list that you identify with as a student and then Peer Leader. • Initiator • Orientor • Facilitator • Encourager • Harmonizer • Evaluator • Analyzer • Summarizer • Fact Seeker • Fact Giver • Comic • Aggressor • Monopolizer • Recognition Seeker • Blocker • Wool-gatherer • Whisperer • Zipper Mouth

  3. So…. Now…. • Consider your FYF class… can you immediately pin point the students that fit these roles? • Do you know who your comics, zipper mouths, monopolizers, etc are? • As a Peer Leader, what can we do to help? If anything?

  4. When dealing with the quiet student…

  5. B.O.R.E.D • Build Comradery • Opportunity for Involvement & Advancement • Recognition • Engage • Do Something

  6. Building Comradery • Be a “friendly” Peer Leader • Be approachable and accessible • When students walk into class have them sit next to a student that they do not know that well and allow them a few seconds to get to know that person and share a fact or two.

  7. Opportunity for Involvement & Advancement • Inside or Outside of the classroom • Invite other upperclassmen in to share their opinions and thoughts • Find out the interests of the quiet student and ensure that someone on the student panel suits their interest

  8. Recognition • If students have done good deeds acknowledge them. • KUDOS, Birthday Shout outs, Brief Congratulations ( Cards, etc.)

  9. Engage • Conduct different activities that force them to be engaged. • Encourage small groups

  10. Do Something • Do things outside of class • Socials • Gator Nights • Harm Museum • UF Traditions

  11. Your DUTY… • Discover their strengths and hone in on them. • This may require more of you as a Peer Leader but be willing to go the extra mile • Start the class with funny and appropriated YouTube videos, to start up conversation • When presenting on certain topics, maybe engage them in a skit. (Resume Do’s & Don’ts Skit or Interview Do’s & Don’ts)
