Warm-up • Today is 11/5, day 36 – 2 sheets of paper • What Chinese traditions or cultural habits did you learn about in the first two chapters? What have we learned about the mother and daughter Suyuan and Jing-mei (June) so far? Write at least six sentences. • Tomorrow visitors will be coming from CMS (to all classes) Be on your best behavior! • Review the first chapter for the reading quiz.

Practice? • 1) What are some of the causes for the conflicting relationship between Jing-Mei and her mother Suyuan? What about An-Mei and her mother, how do the two relationships differ from one another? How are they similar? Give textual details! • 2)If Jing-Mei was born in China and immigrated to America at a later age (her mid-teens), do you think that her relationship with her mother would be any different? For example, would she suffer from internal conflict rather than external? Give textual details! • 3) What if the situation was reversed and The Joy Luck Club was about father and son relationships? Do you think they would have similar conflicts because of the differing traditions, or the same? • 4) Explain the Chinese traditions and explain why they are important to the mothers and/or daughters. Give textual details! • 5) Would the mother/daughter conflicts be any different if they mothers grew up in America also? What if they were African-American, or European-American? Are these conflicts universal?
Individual Writing • Complete Amy Chua response from yesterday • Write a letter to Ms. Chua sharing your evaluation of her parenting style. Compare and contrast her approach with your parents/guardians, or people you know. Cite specific incidents and examples from both the article and your experience. (1 page)
