multiculturalism • In 1971, our prime minister, Pierre Trudeau, made multiculturalism our official policy in Canada • This said that there are many cultures, and each one is an important part of our country But wait! These fish also have so much to offer!
multiculturalism • Under multiculturalism, the government: • recognizes that Canadian society has many different heritages (backgrounds) • helps people and organizations to promote different cultural heritages • Encourages respect and equality for people of all cultural heritages We can learn so much from each other!
multiculturalism • The names of towns and cities often represent things about that community’s past and its people. • Ex.: Iqaluit means “place of fish” in Inuktitut, and is a name that has been used by these people for centuries • Ex: Yellowknife was named for the colour of the gold that was so important in causing the city to grow Assignment: Using an encylcopedia, look up the meaning of the names of three communities in BC
