Overview • What is Community Food Security? • Community Food Security and the Farm Bill • Farm Bill Organizing and Advocacy • Food Day Actions
The Community Food Security Coalition catalyzes food systems that are healthy, sustainable, just, and democratic by building community voice and capacity for change.
Definition & Basic Principles Community food security is a condition in which all community residents obtain a safe, culturally acceptable, nutritionally adequate diet through a sustainable food system that maximizes community self-reliance and social justice. —Mike Hamm and Anne Bellows
The Farm Bill and Community Food Security • The Farm Bill is generally not supportive of community food systems • Commodity programs do not support local agriculture • Local food system funding is limited • SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) addresses hunger and food insecurity
Farm Bill Issues CFSC has worked on Historically • Community Food Projects • Farmers Markets • Local Purchasing • Healthy Food Access • Nutrition Title Programs
Preparing for 2012 Farm Bill • Listening sessions to inform CFSC’s priorities • Collaboration with local hosts • Hundreds of participants across the country
2012 Farm Bill Priorities Two Overarching Themes: • Improving access to healthy food for everyone, especially low-income people. • Building local and regional food systems and infrastructure.
Food Day Actions Organize local actions and events that: • Raise public and policymaker awareness of community food security • Generate support for community food security priorities in the 2012 Farm Bill
