Lake El’gygytgyn Workshop 03 November 2007
El’gygytgyn Logistics • Challenging! • Our team has supported deep drilling projects in Antarctica, Greenland, & Alaska on ice sheets, lake ice & sea ice • This will be the most logistically challenging project we have ever supported until we open an office on the moon
Why? • Remote site in Far East Russia • 260 km from nearest settlement • No existing roads • Arctic Winter drilling = dark + cold • Heavy! – Drill component alone weighs 70 tons • Large foreign project in Russia • Multinational participants & comms across 19 time zones • Everyone is involved in the logistics
Arctic Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) • Permitting • Foreign cargo import/export • Helicopter/fixed wing support
DOSECC • Procure & ship GLAD 800 drill rig to Russia • Obtain Russian drilling partner • Test drill and train Russian drillers (Alaska) • Sign permafrost drilling subcontract with Chaun Geological (CGE)
Alfred Wegener Inst. (AWI) • Permafrost core handling at the lake • Provide technical representation during permafrost campaign • Receive and store cores in Potsdam
VECO Polar Resources (VPR) • Work with reliable partners in Russia to facilitate all aspects of the project: • AARI (Fedorov, Bolshiyanov) • CRDF (Voevodskaya) • CPPI-S (Zhulidov, Gurtovaya)
CPPI-S • Winter trip to Pevek: January ’07 • Information gathering • Air transport options • Surface transport options • Fuel availability, quality, pricing • Evaluated potential partners • Examined equipment & infrastructure
Chaun Geological Mining Co (CGE) • Pevek partner required • Established in 1930’s • Permafrost drilling experience • Company owns, tractors, trailers, dozers, tankers, crane & limited shelters
Sediment drilling campaign • Fuel purchased in July • CGE will likely provide surface transport of • Drill, platform, etc. (~70 tons) • Fuel (165 tons) • Camp structures (Between 70 & 130 tons) • Currently investigating several options for camp infrastructure • Cores will airlifted to Pevek for cold storage
St. Petersburg Planning Meeting • ~23 Nov through 02 December • Meet w. CGE in St. Petersburg • Finalize permafrost plan & schedule • Discuss ’09 camp options • Meet with, and possibly bring in an additional Russian partner • VICAAR (Boyarsky) • Polar Foundation (Sychev, Chilingarov) • POLUS (Orlov, Chilingarov)
