E-mail Technical Coordinators Meeting Chris Bongaarts Steve Siirila November 10, 2004
E-mail Outages • 10/19 outage (one server) • Initial suspect: Webmail – had a problem, but did not cause the outage • Later discovered SAN was main culprit • Aggravated by uneven distribution of users (fixed)
E-mail Outages • 11/1 outage (two servers) • SAN again (same problem) • Following up with SAN group to find a permanent fix
E-mail Outages • 11/9 3:30pm-10:30pm • Effect on our service: delayed incoming e-mail • Blame it on Linux (RH release of FC3, mirror at U kills Packeteer) • MyDoom.AH doesn’t help
Spam/Virus Control • Morris MTAs still to be converted (waiting on hardware) • Will plug hole allowing viruses through to departmental servers
Phase-out of non-SSL services • Preparing mass e-mail notifications for later this month • username.email.umn.edu will stop working as outgoing SMTP gateway (6.4% of gateway users affected)
Phase-out of non-SSL services • FTP goes away • 982 unique users last week • Use SCP or SFTP instead • Researching options for Appleshare
Longer X.500 passwords • Testing about 70% done • Waiting on new hardware for RADIUS service • Implementation slated for winter break
X.500 upgrades • Patch for directory software seems to work (but not as advertised!) • Will deploy new version over next couple weeks • Backend database server this week
Lyris • First production mailing scheduled for Dec. 1 (Athletics) • Contact U Relations for information
PKI • Development continues • End user testing begins in next couple weeks
