  1. Want Ad Assignment • HELP WANTED ADVERTISEMENTS: Pre-class Work 1. Obtain a copy of industry publications containing want ads. 2. Identify one or more good ads. Be able to explain why they are good, in your opinion. 4.  Identify one or more poor ads. Be able to explain why they are poor, in your opinion. 5.  Identify unusual items that you find in the ads. Mention these items during the class discussion. 6. Prepare a list of items that are generally found in most ads. 7. How do the ads that you reviewed limit the number of eligible applicants? 8. Bring this sheet and the want ads to class with you on the assigned day.

Knock-out Factors • Qualifications • immediately eliminate candidates from consideration (or) • would prevent them from applying. • obtain much info from the Job Specifications • could be used as Knock-out questions when setting up interviews. • MUST be non-negotiable! • Generally Education & Experience are not Knock-out factors because they are negotiable or one can be substituted for the other. • Properly classify them

  3. Ad Types • In-column ads • One column wide • Text only • In-column display ads • Display ads • Wider than one column • -simple with borders only • -elaborate with art work, photos, etc. • Text and art work • Design can be done by newspaper or outside art consultant

  4. Ad Types • Multiple Jobs in one ad- is it a good idea? • Blind ads • No company ID • Resumes sent to a P.O. Box/newspaper • Response is delayed • Reasons for using? • Can’t get applicants • Replacing someone • Prevent competitors from knowing your plans • Continuous ads • Run all of the time, or every weekend • Used when there are continual openings, creating a need for continual recruiting • May lower rates from the newspaper

  5. Designing an Ad • Use of white space • even in an in-column ad • Focus on key word(s) • Non-standard typeface allows ad to stand out • Use of: • bold letters, • CAPS, • Exclamations!!! • Separate important sections • Use of borders, highlighting elements (e.g. Stars) and art work
