  1. Der, Die, Das The differences between them

  2. Introduction • This PowerPoint will help you differentiate between “Der”, “Die” and “Das”. • It will help you understand when to use “der”, “die”, or “das”.

  3. Der • “Der” is traditionally used for masculine words. • i.e. “Der Mann” • Fun fact: The highest number of German nouns are “der”. If you are going to guess, “der” is your best shot.

  4. Die • “Die” is traditionally used for feminine words. • i.e. “Die Frau” • However, there are some odd occurrences where this doesn’t prove true. Such as “Der Mädchen”. Even though Mädchen is clearly feminine, it uses “der”. • Fun Fact: All words ending in -heit, -keit, -tät, -ung, -schaft, -ik will be “Die“. It should be “Das Mädchen”

  5. Das • “Das” is used traditionally for words that aren’t gender specific. • i.e. “Das Gepäck”, “Das Auto” • However, when referring to a car brand it is “Der”, “Der Mercedes”, “der Audi” • Fun fact: Rivers are always “der” or “die”. If you need to guess, you now have a 1 in 2 chance at guessing correctly. Or “Neuter gender”
