  2. Our Client • Friends of Children of Brevard County • Non-profit 501 tax exempt company established in 1985 • Help fill unmet needs of children in the state system • These children have been declared by the court to be abused, abandoned, or neglected.

  3. Our Goal • Our SMART goal for our project was to hold a co-ed charity softball tournament on March 28, 2009, to raise $1,000 for the Friends of Children of Brevard, Inc. Our two SMART objectives were coordinating and executing the softball tournament, and having a raffle prior to and during the tournament.

  4. The Outcome • We raised a total of $999.53. There were a total of six teams, four umpires, and a handful of volunteers that participated in our tournament. The raffle was ongoing throughout the semester and the winning tickets were pulled at the tournaments end.

  5. Our Tournament • We arrived at the Stradley Fields at 7 A.M. and left around 7:30 P.M. • There were a total of 6 teams that participated. • Our day was filled with tasks such as running the concession stand, letting the teams and umpires know which field to play on, and run the raffle. • “On behalf of Friends of Children of Brevard, Inc., (Friends), it is our opinion that the four students did a remarkable job with the entire project.” Sharon Weiss, Our Contact for the organization

  6. Our Raffle • Our Raffle was held at the end of the tournament. • We raffled away 2 Beef O’ Brady’s Gift Certificates, 1 Carrabba’s Gift Certificate, A Gift Certificate to a Day Spa, and four tickets to a Tampa Bay vs. Boston baseball game in May. • One of the Board Members from our client pulled the winning names.

  7. Revenue and Expenses • Profit • Teams: $900.00 • Concession: $145.00 • Raffle: $587.50 • FOC Concession: $8.00 • Donations: $550.00 • Expenses • Field Costs: $220.00 • Tampa Tickets: $445.00 • Umpires: $412.00 • Misc. Expenses: $113.97 Total Profit: $999.53

  8. Challenges • Finding an initial non-profit organization • Asked United Way for contacts for other non-profit organizations in Brevard. • Finding teams • Being in constant contact with potential teams and returning to the softball fields weekly • Receiving Donations • Paid for some of the expenses. Continued to ask local business for their help and support.

  9. What is Service Learning? • Service learning has a great impact on UCF business students. • Gives students a chance to manage and experience key aspects of business with the help of a professor and organization. • Service learning allows us to “get our feet wet” without possible career damaging situations. • Being that service learning is by choice it allows students the opportunity to experience certain things otherwise not experienced until in their career. • A UCF Business graduate is well educated, motivated, and ready for the challenges of the business world.
