  3. Historical Perspective: • Wellness Policy required for districts participating in the National School Lunch Program • Based on Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act, 2004

  4. 6.50 Instruction- School Wellness, Aug. 2006 • The Board recognizes the positive relationship between good nutrition, physical activity and the capacity of students to develop and learn.

  5. 6.50 Instruction- School Wellness, Aug. 2006 1. School Based Nutrition Education Goals • Coordinated with health curriculum • Students take ownership and receive consistent message 2. School Based Physical Activity Goals • All students participate daily in PE • In addition to PE, daily physical exercise is encouraged

  6. 6.50 Instruction- School Wellness, Aug. 2006 3. School Based Health and Wellness Activities • School events, field trips, athletic events, etc. should consider LWP goals • Staff are encouraged to use wellness programs, health screenings, etc. as a model for students

Cooperative Efforts to Promote Community Wellness • Schools should actively engage families: physical activity beyond the school day, provide families with information/opportunities to learn about healthy eating, educate on current health related topics • Provide access for students, families, or community to physical activity facilities

Nutrition Guidelines for Food Sold or Served on School Property • All food and beverage sold on school premises will comply with federal and state laws • Schools should offer healthy food and beverage choices 6. Monitoring and Evaluation • Each school shall organize a Wellness Committee • Reinforce guidelines set forth in LWP, report progress yearly for Superintendent’s report.

  9. Committee Members: • Made up of 25 members: Parents, Board Member, administration, staff, nurses, food service director Meetings: • Met 3 times • March 19, April TBD

  10. Vision: • To establish a District-wide philosophy for D200 that supports and promotes wellness, good nutrition, and an active lifestyle.

  11. Why the need for revision ? • Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 • Strengthens Local Wellness Policies (LWP) and adds rules for public input, transparency, and implementation. • Revised policy; 2013-14 school year

  13. What work has been done? • Compared current wellness policy with the proposed elements • Identified top two priorities: • Nutrition promotion • Other School Based Activities to Promote Wellness • Other elements would be included such as nutritional education and physical activity

Wellness Survey Recent changes in the laws governing local wellness and health policies The rise in chronic health conditions (such as food allergies and diabetes) The prevalence of childhood obesity Students (6-12), parents, staff Completed by Mid-March Results to help guide policy revisions

  16. What will be the recommendation? • Analyze Wellness Survey Data: • Nutrition Education • Physical Activity • Other School Based Activities to Promote Wellness (includes nutrition guidelines for all foods available on campus) • Nutrition Promotion • Recommendation to Board of Education in May
