Two Professors, One Student, and a Newspaper: A Strategy for Student Engagement and Critical Thinking Across Courses and Disciplines Hillary Haldane Mark Hoffman Meghan Parmentier Quinnipiac University
Background on the Strategy • Course model • Interdisciplinary in scope • Teamwork approach • senior and junior faculty mentorship opportunities • Why this project • Common interests, common hopes
Objectives of the Strategy Think critically about course readings Provide new tools for learning Provide learning strategies transferable to other classes Intentional reflection on the learning process Engage students with peers in the classroom Make connections between students’ education and the world at large
How the Strategy WorksReading Journal Course reading and Journal due Monday Common NY Times article available on Monday Individual alternate news source reading selected for journal assignment Journal assignment (three readings) due on Friday morning
How the Strategy WorksFriday Discussion • Four groups per class • Each leads discussion three times over semester • One group per week plans and leads discussion • Class rates discussion on index card • Instructor’s Blog reports results and grades discussion
Modified for Anthropology 304 • Changes to the strategy • Shifting from interdisciplinary course to discipline specific course • The transferability of the strategy
How the Assignment Helped My Critical Thinking • Improved the quality of my thinking • Gave me the opportunity to reason the information I read into a personal conclusion; why in particular it made sense to me • The conclusion reached was new knowledge
New Tools for Learning • Thinking about your thinking • Practicing this every week resulted in attention to precision and relevance • Identifies knowledge, values, attitudes, skills and processes
Transferability with classes • Learn to use newfound abilities to seek out the most accurate and fair positions regardless of or in spite of own particular interests or desires • Tools for independent learning beyond memorization; Commitment until clarity and insight are achieved • Strengthening understanding with difficult readings in other subjects
Thoughts on the Learning Process • Why it was effective for me • How I saw it affect other students in the classroom
Engagement with Peers in the Classroom • Role of students and teachers: responsibility to teach work and lead fellow students • Transfer of ideas in discussion, broadening views, learning perspectives • Rating discussion: reflection based on recognition of others’ thoughts
Connections between Education and World at Large • The newspaper in the classroom • Bringing attention and concern outside the campus • Students picking their own outside source, increasing their interest
