  13. Technological Convergence In computing terms, a converged environment is one in which a user can access a wide range of multimedia services using any device and any type of network connection • Think internet access using a mobile ... • Think television and news accessed via the internet ... • Think phone calls via Skype ... • Think emergency broadcasts via social media ... Refers to previously separate technologies such as voice, data, and video that now share resources and interact with each other This creates new possibilities (both personal and professional) Department of Tourism, Hotel and Sport Management - Jason Harding (PHD)

  16. 5 7234HSL Assessment Department of Tourism, Hotel and Sport Management - Jason Harding (PHD)

  17. Assessment – Personal Tech Philosophy Project One – Personal Tech Philosophy – 4th September 11.59pm - 1500 words - 30% Students are required to reflect on how the advent and offering up of the Internet for mass public consumption alongside society's ubiquitous subscription of the resultant technologically converged global village has forever altered the way humanity and business function. This assignment challenge students to generate a personal, yet academically rigorous, philosophical standpoint on the impact of technology on society and business - in particular whether technology is an inherent component of human evolution and therefore, simply 'the medium in which we play this infinite game' (Kelly, 2005) or whether technology is currently leading humanity down a path where 'creativity becomes subservient to the structure of giant computers', 'human expression becomes a peasant activity' (Lanier, 2013), and ultimately 'cheat us of being in touch deeply with those breathing right next to us' (Lin, 1951). Department of Tourism, Hotel and Sport Management - Jason Harding (PHD)

  18. Assessment – Website Sketch Project Two – Website Sketch – 4th September 11.59pm – Hand Drawn Sketch – %10 Students are required to submit a rough plan for the business website they will subsequently create. This requires students to consider various environmental, management, and design issues that need to be considered before developing a website. The submitted document should contain rough ideas and sketches of what it is they are planning on creating and resources that will help that achieve that goal (detailing notes on the business, technical aspects of their planned website, and importantly, ideas on how the website will look, feel, and run). In this context student will be encouraged to submit a digitized version of their rough notes and sketches. Department of Tourism, Hotel and Sport Management - Jason Harding (PHD)

  19. Assessment – Website Demo Project Three – Website Demo – 15th September 11.59pm - Live Website - 40% The Website Demo requires students to develop a demo of a live, internationally acceisble website that will benefit a specific business. This is intended to assess student’s familiarity and application of practical skills whilst considering the management and design issues that were raised in their Website Plan Notes. The assessment criteria for the website project are based on elements of website quality (including professionalism, consistent and detailed information; ease of access to all information; navigation, visual appearance etc) which will be discussed extensively in lectures. Department of Tourism, Hotel and Sport Management - Jason Harding (PHD)

  20. Assessment – Industry Pitch Project Four – Industry Pitch – 16th September 2pm to 4pm – Presentation - 20% The final aspect for the course will see students compete for the opportunity to integrate their work (in particular the fully functional business website they develop) as a large component of the online marketing channels associated with an existent business. Essentially this assignment requires students to pitch their previously developed Website Demo to the business's proprietor. Department of Tourism, Hotel and Sport Management - Jason Harding (PHD)

  32. 10 A Quick Story Department of Tourism, Hotel and Sport Management - Jason Harding (PHD)

  33. A Quick Story Department of Tourism, Hotel and Sport Management - Jason Harding (PHD)

  34. A Quick Story There was this lady that lived near us for ages. And I used to interact with her regularly - usually running back from the surf. When she moved away she gave me some seeds which I planted in a terracotta pot once owned by my Nana. This sunflower was the result. Epic looking flower. Super bright. Like the smile on my daughter's face the moment she saw it had bloomed. But it had the opposite effect on me. For when I spotted it early the same morning I suddenly realised that I didn't even know the lady's name. It has been said that there are two very different ways in which we see people: as a 'you' and as an 'it' (Martin Buber's theory cited by Patrick Stokes in New Philosopher Magazine @newphilosophermagazine Issue 2 2013, p.23). And what I realised this one particular morning was that this lady was just an 'it' to me. A simple object that I navigated around and dealt with in a base-level, pre-programmed, and mechanical fashion. Whenever I said 'Hi' to this lady it was "more for the sake of form than feeling" (Stokes, 2013 again)'. A heartbreaking look into the mirror. Which left me wondering why she would bother giving someone like me a handful of sunflower seeds. In my opinion this type of situation is amplified once online guys. In that context I want to ask you, “do you exist online, is it real to you, do you think it lacks something”? Department of Tourism, Hotel and Sport Management - Jason Harding (PHD)

  35. 11 One Final Question Department of Tourism, Hotel and Sport Management - Jason Harding (PHD)

  36. One Final Question … could you give me a decent academic argument for how internet-based technological convergence has forever changed business … ------------ "Its 2015. Uber, the world's largest taxi company owns no vehicles. Facebook, the worlds most popular media owner creates no content. Alibaba, the most valuable retailer has no inventory. Airbnb, the world's largest accommodation provider owns no real estate“ ------------ Next week I will introduce you to two influential figures, Philip Evans and Don Tapscott … Department of Tourism, Hotel and Sport Management - Jason Harding (PHD)
