The potato blight was not peculiar to Ireland; in fact, it began in North America. In the midst of the potato famine, corn, cattle, and dairy products continues to be produced in Ireland. But rather than give these foodstuffs to the starving, landlords sold them abroad for profits….The nation lost a third of its population during the 1845-1855 famine - more than a million died from starvation or disease.
