Air Trajectory - *NEW*Max = 2 students IMPOUND all materials & graphs Prior to the competition teams will design, construct, and calibrate a single device capable of launching projectiles into a target and collect data. Eye Protection #5 During the launch, the gravitational potential energy must be converted to air pressure or air movement which is then used to launch the projectile
Anatomy & PhysiologyMax = 2 students • Focus is on the A&P of the Cardiovascular, Integumentary, and Immune Systems • Each participant must bring a writing implement and may bring a non-programmable, non-graphing calculator • Team may have one 8.5” x 11” two-sided page of notes • Possible Timed Stations
AstronomyMax = 2 students Focus is on the concepts related to Stellar Evolution & star and planet formation Any type calculator permitted (per student) + laptop OR 3-ring binder (also per student) Resources MUST be attached to rings Test and/or activities No wireless/internet access No power available
Bridge Building Max = 2 students Only one Bridge per team Wood bonded by glue No commercial laminates, particle boards, bamboo, paper, or wood composites (aside from base unit) Any type of adhesive is permitted but no adhesive tapes allowed. No limit on cross-sectional sizes of wood pieces No Impound #2 Eye Protection Required!!
Bungee Drop - *NEW*Max = 2 students IMPOUND Design an SINGLE elastic cord to drop a mass as close as possible, but not touching, a landing surface. Cord can be rubber, nylon, latex, thread, sewing elastic, metal springs, etc. May consist of one or more of these materials. Must terminate with a closed metal ring. Must Pass Elasticity Test: While being suspended vertically, the bottom meter of the cord must stretch to at least 1.25 meters when a single 500g mass is attached to this section and return to approximately its original length after the mass is removed. Mass will be 50-300g; increments of 25g. Drop height will be 2-5m Two drops allowed…2nd drop height might be different than 1st.
Cell Biology(& Cellular Biochemistry)Max = 2 students Competition may be a series of lab stations, models, data collection, problems to solve under specific listed topics Z87 Chemical splash goggles Only non-programmable, non-graphing calculators may be used. Each team may bring one 8.5” x 11” two-sided page of notes.
Chemistry LabMax = 2 Students Focus = Kinetics (50%) & Chemical Reactions/Stoichiometry (50%) Each participant must bring goggles & a writing implement; may bring a non-programmable, non-graphing calculator One three-ring Binder (any size) containing information in any form from any source Required to participate: #4 Eye protection Pants/skirts to cover ankles Long sleeved lab coat that reaches the wrist & knees OR long sleeved shirt that reaches the wrist AND a chemical apron that reaches the knees Close-toed shoes
Compound Machines Max = 2 students IMPOUND Two parts: Written Test & Device Testing Teams bring a single pre-made Class-I lever connected in series to a Class-II lever to use for testing; each with a single length less than 0.50m. No electric or electronic parts allowed! Supervisor will provide all masses Teams may not bring masses All reference materials must fit into a standard 3-ring binder. Any type of calculator is permitted.
Disease DetectiveMax = 2 students Use investigative skills in the scientific study of disease, injury, health and disability in population or groups of people Focus = Population Growth Non-programmable, non-graphing calculators allowed (per participant) Each participant MUST bring a writing implement Team may have one 8.5” x 11” two-sided page of notes Visit the indicated web sites for training materials...like the CDC.
Dynamic PlanetMax = 2 students Focus = Physical & Geological Oceanography Up to TWO non-graphing calculators allowed...other kinds okay. FOUR 8.5” x 11” two-sided pages of notes allowed per team.
It’s About TimeMax = 2 Students Impound Construct one non-electrical device to measure time intervals between 10-300 sec Reference notes must fit into a 3-ring binder of any size. Calculator may be used during Part II Test Part I 50% = 5 Timed Trials Part II 50% = Written exam
Entomology - *NEW*Max = 2 Students 30 insect orders and 100 families from the official list Team may bring: The official reference book One 8.5” x 11” reference page Magnifying glass
Experimental DesignMax = 3 students Will design, conduct, and report the findings of an experiment done on site Must bring #4 eye protection and writing instrument May bring timepiece, ruler, and a non-programmable calculator Chemicals that require other safety clothing will not be used
ForensicsMax = 2 students Analysis of a Crime Must bring: ANSI Z87 indirect vent chemical splash goggles Pants/skirts to cover ankles Long sleeved lab coat that reaches the wrist & knees OR long sleeved shirt that reaches the wrist AND a chemical apron that reaches the knees Long hair, shoulder length or longer must be tied back Close-toed shoes Each team may bring a non-camera calculator One 3-ring binder (any size) • Supervisor will provide: iodine reagent, HCL, NaOH, Benedict’s solution etc • You should bring: Test tubes and test tube holders, droppers, funnel, filter paper, pH or litmus paper, spatulas, plastic spoons or stirring rods, 9-volt conductivity tester, thermometer, flame test equipment, slides, ruler, hand lens, writing instruments, a pencil, paper towels, and metal tongs.
Fossils - *NEW*Max = 2 students Deomonstrate knowledge of ancient life by completing tasks at a series of stations. Emphasis on fossil identification and ability to answer questions about classification, habitat, ecologic relationships, behaviors, environmental adaptations and the use of fossils to date and correlate rock units Each TEAM May bring ONLY: one magnifying glass, one published field guide, and one 3-ring binder of any size containing notes (hand written or computerized), and/or purchased materials
Geologic Mapping Max = 2 students Interpretative map questions/tasks: Topographic & geologic maps, plate tectonics, rock formation, earth history, fold geometries, fault types, stereonet projections, aquifers, geohazard risks etc. ,May bring reference materials in a 3-ring binder, ruler, protractor, non-programmable calculator, colored pencils, and an equal-area projection stereonet with tracing paper & pin.
Green Generation - *NEW*Max = 2 students Understanding of general ecological principles, the history and consequences of human impact on our environment, solutions to reversing trends and sustainability concept. Team may bring: *One 8.5”x11” two-sided note sheet *2 non-programmable, non-graphing calculators 2015: Aquatic Issues, Air Quality Issues and Climate Change
Mission Possible Max = 3 students NO IMPOUND #2 Eye protection required Device designed to follow a specific sequence of consecutive Energy Transfers. These include electrical, mechanical, thermal, chemical, and visual light An Energy Transfer List is required Device must be no larger than 60.0 x 60.0 x 60.0 cm The device task is to raise one or more golf balls, collecting them in one or more scoring jugs, and activating a buzzer to signal the end of the devices operation.
Protein Modeling - *NEW*Max = 3 students Impound Understand basic features of protein structure Explore and manipulate protein structures using the online protein visualization webpages Create physical models using a foam covered wire called a Mini-Toober 5 double sided pages of notes Part 1 Pre-Built Model 40% Part 2: On-site Model 30% Part 3:Exam 30%- bring writing instrument This Year's Theme isEditing the Human Genome
Scrambler Max = 2 students IMPOUND @ Gym Egg transport device powered by a falling mass No electrical/electronic devices No liquid substances may be applied to the wheels Okay to apply liquid to other parts as long as they leave no residue on track! Must travel a minimum of 8.20m and stay within a 1.50m wide track before coming to a complete stop near the center of a Terminal Barrier.
Technical Problem SolvingMax = 2 students TWO lab stations - up to 10 questions per station Teams will be required to answer a question by; Gathering data, Processing data, and Using this data to solve the given problem Metric units & significant figures required PossibleProbes 2015 * Temperature * Dual Force * CBR2 (Motion Detector) * Colorimeter Eachstudentmay bring only two 8.5” X 11” two-sided page of information in any form, from any source. Any type of calculator allowed Chemical/splash goggles (#4) are required...students must bring set with them! 2015 Topics: Forensic patterns of physical not chemical evidence associated with a crime scene. Design, conduct and analyze experiments to solve a proposed crime based on physical evidence supplied.
Wright StuffMax = 2 students • No impound • To design, construct and test two flight rubber-powered monoplanes to achieve maximum time aloft • Each airplane may be constructed from published plan(s), commercial kits and/or student designs. • REQUIRED: Flight log of recorded data. Data must include at least 6 parameters (3 required and at least 3 additional) for at least 10 test flights prior to the competition. • The required parameters are: • 1) motor size before windup • 2) number of turns on the motor at launch • 3) Flight Time. • The team must choose 3 additional parameter beyond those required (e.g. turns remaining after landing, estimated/recorded peak, flight height, the motor torque at launch, etc.)

Use only words, numerals, and single letters may be used Symbols (other than those from standard keyboard), drawings, and diagrams are not allowed Use of diagram or drawings will result in disqualification. All abbreviations must be defined at the beginning or when the abbreviation is first used
