WHAT WAS JACKIE ROBINSON FAMOUS FOR? • Jackie Robinson was the first African American to play Major League Baseball. • He played in six ALL STAR games, back to back in 1949 through 1954. • He was named Rookie of the year. Jackie Robinson rounding third base during game three of the 1955 World Series; the Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the New York Yankees, four games to three, to win the championship.

  4. Compare and Contrast Until Jackie Robinson played the white and black players were separated by the NEGRO league, now everybody plays together. They didn’t use helmets for protection. A regular season when he played was 154 games now it is 162. The distance between the bases have not changed. The pitching mound is still 60 feet and 6 inches. They all still use wood bats too.

  5. WHY IS HE IN THE HALL OF FAME? Jackie Robinson played for 10 years in MLB, with a batting average .311. He was a 6 time all star, and he has 1 World Series Championship. In 1947 and 1949 he lead the National League in stolen bases, and in batting average, and was named MVP. He was named rookie of the year in 1947. He led the league in double plays when he played 2nd base for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1949 though 1952. That is why he is in the Hall of Fame.

  7. JACKIE’S BASEBALL CAREER In 1935 through 1938 he played catcher and shortstop for Muir Tech high school. In college at UCLA he was the first to LETTER in 4 different sports, which included baseball. After that he played in the NEGRO league for 2 years. Then he went to MLB for 10 years.

  8. SUMMARY Jackie was born in January 31st 1919. Jackie was a good athlete. He wanted to play professional baseball, but he could only play in the NEGRO league. Then 2 years later he signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers. He became the first black player to play in MLB. He had a 10 year career with the Brooklyn Dodgers. He died October 24th 1972.

Also MLB too. • All star- one of the best players. • MVP-most valuable player • HR- home runs • RBI- runs batted in • AVG- batting average • Letter- to perform at a high level in school sponsored activities. • Negro- it is a African American person
