  1. Czechoslovakia AnD the MUNICH CONFERENCE

  2. The Sudetenland Strong ties with Germany, then part of Austro-Hungary and later became part of Czechoslovakia after the Treaty of Versailles By 1921, 23.4% of the Czech population was German, with a majority in Sudetenland (more Germans than Czechs) German nationalists the Sudeten German Party, led by Konrad Heinlein and with links to the Nazis, began to campaign for separation from Czechoslovakia in 1938.

  3. Questions How many times did Chamberlain meet Hitler? Finish this Chamberlain sentence “If at first you don’t succeed...” What promise did Hitler make when given the Sudetenland? What did Chamberlain believe the public would think of getting involved in a war with Germany? What was Hitler “cheated out of”? What were the consequences for the rest of Czechoslovakia? Why did Hitler have a victory party? What words were used to describe the Germans?

  4. Consequences of Munich Conference • Germany was handed 33% of Czechoslovakia’s population, her main defences, much of her industry – including the Skoda armament works • By giving up Czechoslovakia, the Allies sacrificed an ally who could have • been a great help if war broke out. Their army had 2 million trained men • Hitler gained confidence – AGAIN • He had taken the Rhineland, Austria and now Sudetenland and Britain • and France had backed down • Russia were upset because they had been prepared to help the Czechs, • but they lost faith in the British and French, changed foreign policy • and moved closer to the Germans

  5. What they said “My good friends, this is the second time in our history that there has come back from Germany to Downing Street peace with honour.... I believe it is peace for our time.” Neville Chamberlain “We have suffered a total and unmitigated defeat. All is over... I think you will find that in a period of time.... Czechoslovakia will be engulfed in the Nazi regime. We have passed an awful milestone in our history, when the whole equilibrium of Europe has been deranged..... And do not suppose that this is the end. This is only the beginning of the reckoning.”Winston Churchill
