Why the change in degrees? • A response to the regular major review cycle (most recent conducted in 2007-2008 academic year) • The formation of the NSW Institute of Teachers and requirement for all NSW DET - TQAP accredited teaching degrees to be re-accredited against the new Professional Teaching Standards of the NSWIT ATEA 2009 | www.newcastle.edu.au

  3. What did the independent internal review suggest? • Moving from 180 Units Education : 140 Units Discipline, to an even 160:160 split. • Identical degrees and courses across all sites: Central Coast, Newcastle, and Port Macquarie ATEA 2009 | www.newcastle.edu.au

What does the NSWIT require? • 10 units of curriculum study in all KLAs (plus an additional 10 units of study in English and Maths) • 10 units of discipline study in each KLA • 80 Days of Professional Experience in a 4 Year program (the new program has 90 Days) • Completion of mandatory program requirements in: Literacy, Teaching Students from NESB, Technology, Aboriginal Education, Special Education, Classroom and Behaviour Managament. What are the changes in our BT/BA? • Degree title – added the indicator of “Primary” • Identical degree structure across all campus sites: Central Coast, Newcastle, and Port Macquarie • Some course changes to meet the new mandatory program requirements of the NSWIT • Movement away from GPA Honours to replacement with a “thesis” Honours pathway (provides possibility of direct entry to PhD and scholarships) • Possibility of a complete “major” in BA (of 80 units) by moving to 160:160 split with discipline ATEA 2009 | www.newcastle.edu.au

What is the new degree structure? • Education Foundations (30 Units) • KLA Discipline Foundations (70 Units) • KLA Curriculum Studies (80 Units) • Professional Studies (40 Units) • Discipline Depth Studies (40 Units) • Sustainable Communities Elective (10 Units) • Free Electives (40 Units) • Honours (40 Units) • Special Education Specialisation (60 Units) ATEA 2009 | www.newcastle.edu.au

Principles Guiding Transition Arrangements • No disadvantage to students • The degree shouldn’t take longer than 4 years full time • Students shouldn’t have to complete more than 320 units total • Students must continue to have either a (GPA or Thesis) Honours or Special Ed pathway • Students shouldn’t loose their accreditation to teach because they take longer than the NSWIT requirement of 4 + 1 Years • Least burden to staff and resourcing • The School should move as quickly as possible to the new programs so we are not duplicating efforts across multiple programs ATEA 2009 | www.newcastle.edu.au
