Four-theme course structure Theme I Personal and professional development • Med/Law, Ethics, Professional Behaviour, Health Enhancement Program (HEP) Theme II Population, society, health & illness • Community Based Practice, Health Promotion, Evidence Based Clinical Practice Theme III Scientific basis of clinical practice • e.g. Anatomy, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, psychology, sociology Theme IV Clinical skills The four Themes run through all years of the course with varying weightings

Structure of the Monash U/G MBBS • Years 1 & 2 largely Campus-Based • Year 1 ‘case-based’ learning • Year 2+ ‘problem-based’ learning • Years 3, 4 & 5 in Clinical setting (metro or rural) • Year 3 Medicine/Surgery • Year 4 General Practice, Psychiatry, Women’s & Children’s Health • Year 5 students are “pre-interns”(7 x 6 week rotations) Plus Theme I & II content

Domestic Selection for Monash Central MBBS • Selection is based on the combined score of the following: • Only applicants who complete all three stages of the selection process will be considered for a place in the MBBS at Monash. • Interview • Multi-Mini Interview (8 stations of 10 minutes each- 2 minutes reading time and 8 minutes answering questions) • Interviews will be held 4-18 December 2012 at Clayton Campus. UMAT Must sit – 25 July 2012 - www.umat.acer.edu.au • Academic results • ATAR or equivalent results MUST be available by 10 January 2013 • 30 in English and Chemistry

10. Domestic Selection for Monash Central MBBS • Applicants must be new to tertiary studiesi.e., current year 12 completion, or completed VCE or equivalent within the previous 2 years without commencing tertiary studies

Categories of places for ‘domestic’ students • Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP): VTAC Course Code 28251 • ~160 places in Central Program • Extended Rural Cohort (ERC): VTAC Course Code 28151 • ~30 Commonwealth places • Bonded Medical Places (BMP): VTAC Course Code 28691 • ~63 placesBond – ‘Return of Service Obligation’: students will work in a District of Workforce Shortage of their choice for a duration equal to the length of their MBBS degree; (now with ‘scaling’)

VTAC Preferences • Separate codes – make sure you understand them • There is NO ADVANTAGE in putting BMP code ahead of CSP or ERC code • Order your VTAC preferences according to level of interest(i.e. most to least) • Notification of interview by email in late October • NB. Monash medicine cannot be added at December Change of Preference e.g. If you are interested in studying medicine in rural Victoria consider ranking ERC before CSP www.med.monash.edu.au/medical/northernvic/

Dean’s Rural List (DRL) & Dean’s Indigenous List (DIL) DRL........the applicant must have resided (according to principal home address) for at least 5 years in areas classified as RA 2-5 since beginning primary school (ASGC-RA: Australian Standard Geographic Classification - Remoteness Areas). • The RA categories are defined in terms of ‘remoteness’ - the physical distance of a location from the nearest Urban Centre based on population size. • RA1 - Major Cities of AustraliaRA2 - Inner Regional AustraliaRA3 - Outer Regional Australia RA4 - Remote AustraliaRA5 - Very Remote Australia DIL........ Australian Indigenous applicants to the medicine course may apply to be considered for the Dean's Indigenous List. Please note that applicants of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent who are members of an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community are eligible to apply for waiving of certain costs associated with their study. Based on these applications, some additional interviews will be offered to applicants eligible for the Dean's Indigenous List, which will function in the same way as the Dean's Rural List to enable us to identify Australian Indigenous applicants not offered an interview in the initial round. 16. Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) • MMI stations will comprise a series of scenarios and associated questions or tasks focusing on an applicant’s relevant personal qualities, including: • motivation• critical thinking• communication • ethical/empathetic reasoning The MMI consists of eight sequential interview‘stations’ (plus one rest station). At each station the applicant is interviewed for 8 minutes followed by 2 minutes for changeover (i.e. 10 minutes per station) with a ‘circuit’ taking 90 minutes to complete.

Medicine at Monash – Graduate Entry • Available to applicants who have previously completed a 3 year (or equivalent) Bachelor degree • Students will undertake Year A at Gippsland campus • Years B-D will be taught across eastern Victoria in a range of hospitals, community health settings and in general practices.

18. Selection for Monash Graduate Entry MBBS • Selection is based on the combined score on the following: • Only applicants who complete all three stages of the selection process will be considered for a place in the MBBS at Monash. • GAMSAT (40%) • (minimum score of 50 in each of three sections and an overall indicative score is determined annually). • Test Date for 2013 intake was 24 March 2012 Next test will be March 2013 for 2014 entry. GPA - (hurdle only) - ≥5.0 (out of 7.0 max) • Interview (60%) • Interviews held at Gippsland - 26, 27 and 29 September 2012 • Invitations for interview sent out late August
