Definition : being unable to raise your hand at the back of your wrist without using your other hand to assist
A/Surface anatomy B/blood supply Where does it happen
Actions: A/Inability to EXTEND: *wrist *thumb *finger joint The wrist and hand will drop :B/ hand pronated-
A/Mainly: the most known cause is paralysis of your radial nerve at some point or points along its length by *compression of the radial nerve under the armpit, *crush by leaning on your funny bone or crutches Etiology :
B/Other: 1/ Neck trauma to the origin C7/8 spine fracture, disc herniation, or bone spur. 2/Shoulder trauma 3/Injury to the R.N e.g. fractured hummers. 4/poisoning toxicity 5/Autoimmune disorders which destroy nerves.
Symptoms and signs : Numbness Soreness at the site nerve impingement Tingling, pins and needles in fingers Able to grasp but not raise hand at the back of the wrist
Related palsies include Honeymoon Palsy Handcuff Palsy caused by the application of handcuffs too tightly Dave Mustaine
Diagnosis can't raise your wrist at the back of your hand. An EMG nerve conduction studypinpoints the location of the nerve injury by firing a small current down the length of the radial nerve from nerve to palm and seeing where the current suddenly drops off
(An electromyogram (EMG) measures the electrical activity of muscles at rest and during contraction. Nerve conduction studies measure how well and how fast the nerves can send electrical signals).
