Unit 7: The Body 7.3 Stages of Decomposition
Stages of Decomposition • There are predictable stages of decomposition that all bodies will progress through. • The rate of decomposition will vary depending on conditions such as heat, moisture, and scavengers.
Stage 1: Autolysis • 0-4 Days • CO2 in blood increases • pH decreases • Waste accumulates • Cells poisoned • Enzymes dissolve cells • Fluid Filled Blisters on skin • Skin Slippage
Stage 2: Putrefaction/Bloating • 4-10 days • Destruction of soft tissue by bacteria • Skin greenish color • Methane/ammonia released • Odor
Stage 3: Black Putrefaction • 10-20 days • Body collapses • Gases escape • Fluids drain • STRONG ODOR
Stage 4: Butyric Fermentation • 20-50 days • Body drying out • Cheesy odor from butyric acid
Stage 5: Dry Decay • 50 days – 1 year • Body almost dry • Slow rate of decay • May mummify depending on conditions
