3. Introduction to Freading • The Alberta Library(TAL) has licensed Freading, an ebooklending service, for TAL member public libraries. • One year pilot project funded by APLEN via Alberta Municipal Affairs Public Library Services Branch. • The license is pay-as-you-go, so the ultimate cost will depend on the popularity of the service. Up to $400,000 has been committed to the license over the next 12 months.

4. Introduction to Freading • Library Ideas is a global media company focused on libraries. The company offers The Freading eBook Service, The Freegal Music Service, and Rocket Languages as part of its developing product suite. • The collection currently includes approximately 12,000titles from all genres, with new titles added regularly. • They do not publish a comprehensive list of publishers, but they have dozens of internationally known publishers supplying some or all of their catalogs, including Sterling, Sourcebooks, Workman and Kensington. • Unlimited simultaneous access to all titles, so there are no wait times or hold lists. • Titles have a two-week loan period and may be renewed for another two weeks.

5. Token System • Freading is free to library patrons (with a valid library card) • Uses a token system for downloading ebooks. • Each book on the Freading site is labeled with the number of tokens required to download it. • The two-week renewal may use additional tokens, depending on the book. • Titles are 1-4 tokens each • Publishers: • 6 months - Front list (4 tokens) • 7-24 months - mid-list (2 tokens) • 25 months & later – backlist (1 token)

Token System Patrons: • Receive 4 tokens/week • Receive tokens on Sunday @ midnight EST (10:01 pm MST ) • Patrons can download…. • 1-4 token title/week • 2-2 token title/week • 4-1 token title/week • Unused tokens roll over for 4 weeks • Up to 16 tokens maximum @ end of 4th week • Drops back down to 4 tokens after that • 4 week cycle – depends on first login date

7. Token System • “0” Token Titles • Guaranteed 2wk renewal option @ ANY POINT IN THE FUTURE – but ONLY if 1-2 tokens originally……if 4 tokens originally, then 1 token renewal charge. • “Work the system” • You can download throughout year, then exercise your renewal options all at once (eg. vacations).

9. Searching for Freading Titles • SEARCH options / Advanced search options • EPUB/PDF checkboxes • Categories & sub-categories • Title detail – hover over publisher & author for info & hyperlinks to more titles from same • English titles only – French and Spanish coming

10. Downloading Freading Titles • To a computer • Adobe Digital Editions software • (Requires Adobe ID authorization) • Note: Authorizing the Freading App counts as a SECOND authorization on the same device if patron has the OVERDrive App already (even though on one device). If they have other apps that require Adobe ID authorization, it may count as more (eg. Kobo Store). • To a mobile device • Freading App (from appropriate app store) • KoboVox (Kobo App Store) • Pandigital Novel – not available

11. “My Downloads” & “Wish List” • “MY DOWNLOADS” – (history) • “Status” (13 days left, etc.) • Re-download link located here • Can download to 3 devices • (similar to OverDrive’s “3 downloads”) • “WISH LIST” • Only available when library has reached its limit • (not when the patron reaches their limit) • ONLY guaranteed on Monday following
