Forming Imperatives in Latin! Singular Imperatives: (commands 1 person) Latin verbs that end in vowels. ex. veni! = COME!!! sede! = SIT DOWN!!! Plural Imperatives:(commands more than 1) Latin verbs that end in –te (add –te to the singular imperative) ex. cedete! = STOP IT!!! sedete! = SIT DOWN!!!
Negative Imperatives in Latin! Singular, Negative Imperatives (command 1 person NOT to do something) noli + infinitive ** ex. Nolicurrere! = Don’t run! Plural, Negative Imperatives (command more than 1 person NOT to do something) nolite + infinitive** ex. Noliteclamare! = Don’t shout! **Infinitive – Latin verb forms that end in –re and are translated “to verb”. e.g. Sedere – to sit

Imperatives – Latin 2 ONLY! Singular Imperative Formation: 2nd p.p. – the –re ***SAME form as the PRESENT STEM*** (The singular imperative ends in the VOWEL that identifies the conjugation. See pg. 147 in your text for examples.) Plural Imperative Formation: Present Stem + -te** **3rd conjugation verbs form their PLURAL imperatives with -ite and NOT –ete. E.G. “trahe!” becomes “trahite!”
