FST Semester 1 Final Review: Chapters 1-4
Observational vs. Experimental Studies Observational Studies – watch individuals, measure the variables of interest • Goals: Describe a group or situation, avoid influencing the responses. Experimental Studies – impose a treatment on individuals to observe their responses. • Goals: Test for cause and effect, test a hypothesis, etc.
Sampling When we can’t get the whole population we sample. • Goal: Get the best estimate of the actual population. • Parameter vs. Statistic • SRS vs. Stratified Sample Sampling Errors • Response vs. Non-response
Margin of Error • Margin of Error plus or minus 4 percentage points means: • If we took thousands of samples using the exact same method, 95% of our samples would fall in between ±4% of the actual population parameter.
Variables Response, Explanatory, Lurking, Confounding Variability and Bias • Pictures of different examples Validity
Experiments Placebo, Control Experiment Designs • Randomized Comparative, Block, Double-Blind, Matched Pair Causal Relationships Experimental Errors
Graphs and Such Histograms, Pie Chart, Line Graph, Box and Stem Plots • Why do we use them and how do we use them. Measures of Center • Mean, Median, Mode Standard Deviation and 5 Number • What are they good for?
Random • Expect some sort of question asking you to find a misleading way to present the data using some method that you know. • Calculator Questions?
