  2. How can we convince the national policy makers that Disaster Reductionis a MUST for Sustainable Development in Asia - A single disaster can wipe out annual GDP of a country. - Natural Disasters can be the biggest obstacle to social security of a country.

  4. - It is necessary to improve the collection, organization and dissemination of data on the human, social, economic and environmental impact of disasters in order to demonstrate to policy and decision makers that disaster reduction is cost effective and conducive to sustainable development

  5. - The sharing of information and the networking among relevant actors in the information field is essential to ensure wider involvement and greater impact in policy and decision making.

GLIDE - For Effective DisasterInformation Sharing & Management Background • Each organization has its own databases using its own coding system • No access between databases • It’s not easy to relate one event data to another database’s data Difficulty to match data Different names are used; (West) India Earthquake, Gujarat Earthquake, Bhuj Earthquake, Kobe Earthquake, Hanshin- Awaji Earthquake, Hyogo-Nanbu Earthquake Different dates are registered; Difficult to identify when a flood/drought started By introducing Unique Disaster ID • Easy access to various data sources • Rapid automatic linking by search engine Facilitate Effective Info. Sharing

Specific Process Step 1 • Disaster management/research organizations give minor changes on their information database to include GLIDE (GLobal unique disaster IDEntifier number), or include the GLIDE Number when creating a new database. Step 2 • Disaster management/research organizations open their information database on the Internet. Step 3 • Disaster management/research organizations install a function to link to other databases using the GLIDE Number to provide and share necessary information.

EVENT GLIDE Partners • Information sharing with GLIDE is needed immediately after the event. • After the event, GLIDE partners access the GLIDE Generator for a new GLIDE of the event. • GLIDE should be the Unique ID for each event.   14. “GLIDE Technical Meeting” held 14-15 July 2003 in Geneva • ParticipantsOCHA/ReliefWeb, OCHA/FCSS, ADRC, CRED, UNDP, ISDR, WMO, IFRC, LaRed • Participants endorsed the necessity of the real-time issuance of GLIDE numbers for information sharing and the multi-user GLIDE number generator. • Enrichment of GLIDENUMBER.net was recommended, including the posting of the results of this meeting as well as the reports of all the past GLIDE meetings. • Participants agreed to make a brochure using the common design to the poster. • Participants recommended that a pilot study be conducted in 2-3countries to see compatibility between national-level database and international database such as EM-DAT, and to construct a framework, including resource application and workplan to send a clear message to potential donors. • The report of the GLIDE technical meeting has been endorsed at ISDR-IATF 8th meeting (5-6 Nov. 2003).

  15. Recommendations • ADRC developed GLIDE Search. • For immediate and effective use of GLIDE, ADRC, ReliefWeb and LaRED are developing GLIDE Generator, GLIDE Manager and GLIDE Report. • Country based disaster databases (by national disaster coordination offices, e.g. UNDP country offices) to share information through GLIDE. • GLIDE partners will be able to generate and share disaster information easily by GLIDE and GLIDENUMBER.net. • GLIDE users will be able to search and gather disaster information easily by GLIDE and GLIDENUMBER.net. • GLIDE can be used as a tool to share information among international and national disaster DB.
