Creation of TVA (cont.) -Part of Roosevelt's New Deal -Aimed at ending the Depression -Roosevelt wanted to create: "A corporation clothed with the power of government but possessed the flexibility and initiative of a private enterprise."
Where is the Tennessee Valley? -Drainage basin of the Tennessee River -Includes: • Tennessee • SW Kentucky • NW Georgia • NE Mississippi • Western Virginia • North Carolina
Main Goals of the TVA Main Purposes: -Tackle economic issues • Through electricity, farming, construction, etc. -Conservation • Part of New Deal, One of Roosevelt's "C's" -Provide electricity • Only 10% of rural areas had electricity
What did they do? -Built dams • Controlled floods, produced electricity, improved navigation on rivers -Worked with farmers to preserve environment • Taught new farming technique, replanted forests, developed fertilizers -Provided low-cost electricity • Dams produced hydroelectric power @ low prices
Major Issues -People thought gov. shouldn't interfere with economy • Said it was step towards socialism -Utility companies also opposed • Said government was taking away business
Government & Involvement -Was declared constitutional -Many court cases against it • Concerned about gov's involvement -Government became involved in jobs & public works -Followed Roosevelt's idea of increased federal spending
Effects -Construction of Dams • Created 80,000 temporary jobs -New farming techniques • Brought region back to fertility -New power sources • Made farms more productive -Planted new forests • Conserved soil by reducing erosion
Effects (Cont.) -Modernized the Tennessee Valley area -Made life easier during tough times -Overall was very successful -Program is still active today
