  1. Lesson 13-5bTransformationspp. 532-533 Vocabulary to watch out for this lesson: Transformation Translation Reflection Rotation EQ: How can you investigate transformations?

  2. A transformation is a movement of a figure. • There are 3 types of transformations. They include: • Translations – slides • Reflections – flips • Rotations – turns • In a translation, a figure is slid horizontally, vertically, or both. EQ: How can you investigate transformations?

  3. Perform a translation of a figure on a coordinate grid. • On the graph paper you’ve been given, draw a parallelogram like the one shown below. Label the vertices ABCD. EQ: How can you investigate transformations?

  4. Now, move that parallelogram over 5 units to the right. • Draw your new parallelogram. Label the vertices A’, B’, C’, and D’. • Parallelogram A’B’C’D’ is the image of parallelogram ABCD after a translation 5 units to the right. EQ: How can you investigate transformations?

  5. Perform a reflection of a figure on a coordinate grid • In a reflection, a figure is flipped over a line. • Draw a parallelogram as shown below. Label the vertices A, B, C, D. EQ: How can you investigate transformations?

  6. Trace the reflection of the parallelogram. Label the vertices A’, B’ C’, D’. • Parallelogram A’B’C’D’ is the image of parallelogram ABCD reflected over the y-axis. EQ: How can you investigate transformations?

  7. Perform a rotation of a figure on a coordinate grid. • In a rotation, a figure is rotated about a point. • Draw a parallelogram on the coordinate grid as shown. Label the vertices A, B, C, and D. • Rotate the figure 90˚clockwise about the origin. • Then draw the rotation of the figure. Label the vertices A’, B’ C’, D’. • Parallelogram A’B’C’D’ is the image of parallelogram ABCD rotated 90˚clockwise about the origin. EQ: How can you investigate transformations?

  8. Your Turn • Draw a quadrilateral like the one shown. Perform each transformation described on a coordinate plane. • A translation 5 units to the left • A reflection across the y-axis • A 90˚ rotation counterclockwise EQ: How can you investigate transformations?
