Tola • Tola, the son of Puah • From Issachar • Lived in Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim • Judged 23 years
Jair • Jair was from Gilead • He judged for 22 years • He had 30 sons who rode on 30 donkeys and controlled 30 cities • These cities were in Gilead and were called “Havoth Jair” • Not the same Jair as Num. 32:41 or Deut. 3:14

God Gave Them Over • The Ammonites and the Philistines begin to oppress Isreal • The story of Jephthah centers on the oppression from Ammon • The Ammonites begin oppressing Israel in Gilead • The even pressed as far as Judah, Benjamin, and Ephraim
Israel Confesses • God tells Israel to call on the gods they serve • Israel confesses their sin • Israel puts away their gods, and God is moved by mercy to help them • The Ammonites encamp in Gilead • The Israelites camp at Mizpah

Background of Jephthah • Jephthah is the son of Gilead by a harlot • He was driven out of his house by his brothers • He lived in Tob and had worthless men to follow him on raids
Jephthah Is Called • The men of Gilead call to Jephthah for help • Jephthah initally refuses, but eventually agrees
