The Main Idea The many changes in the business world today are creating new challenges for people who operate, or manage, those businesses. What is management? Managers have many different roles to play to make sure the business is operating smoothly. Management The process of deciding how best to use a business’s resources to produce goods/services.
Levels of Management • Senior Management • Highest level • Middle Management • Responsible for meeting the goals that senior management sets • Supervisory Management • Lowest level of management
Senior Management • Establishes the goals of the business • Decides what actions are necessary to meet those goals • Decides how to use the company’s resources • CEO – Chief Executive Officer • COO – Chief Operating Officer
Middle Management • Include department heads and district sales managers • Sets goals for specific areas of the business • Decides what the employees in each area must do to meet those goals.
Supervisory Management • Make sure the day-to-day operations of the business run smoothly. • Forepersons, crew leaders, and store managers are examples
Central York Chain of Command – what is it? Get with a new partner and figure out Central’s three levels of Management and list each person’s responsibilities.

Management Skills • Third way of looking at the mgmt process is by examining the kinds of skills required to perform a particular job • Conceptual skills- help mgrs understand how different parts of a business relate to one another and to the business as a whole • Human relations skills- mgrs need to understand and work well with people • Technical skills- specific abilities that ppl use to perform their jobs

Principles of Management pg. 16 Managers often use certain rules when deciding how to run their businesses, known as “principles of management” Principle Is a basic law or truth
You're the boss in a predominantly male environment. The presence of a new female employee stirs up conflict because your company has not had a chance to conduct sensitivity training. Some of your male employees make inappropriate remarks to your new employee. She complains to you; in response, you sanction those responsible for the conduct. You also wonder if it would be wise to move your new female employee to another position where she would be less likely to draw attention

Women and Minorities in Management • In 2012 only 16% of the executives in country’s largest companies (Fortune 500) were women • 27% of the For. 500 companies had no female officers at all. Glass ceiling The invisible barrier that prevents women and minorities from moving up in the world of business.
Advertisements for Managers! • Create a wanted ad for each of the three levels of management we discussed • Use program of your choice to create 1 page/slide and put all three ads on one screen, as if in a newspaper • The ad should include a made up job opening which lists the type of work this manager would be required to do and the characteristics needed for this type of career, don’t forget hourly wage/salary! • Be sure to make it look like an ad you would see in the newspaper, with box around it etc. • Make sure it is 1 page/1 slide. Save it to your Drive folder for this class in a format I can view on a PC • Example
