The Facts • Business crime in England & Wales cost £1.6 billion 2011/12 (*CVS 2012) • Almost 10m offences committed against businesses annually (2012); 7.7 million in wholesale /retail compared to 9m domestic & other crimes. Estimated at 4.1 million instances of shoplifting alone. • Average retail based businesses in England & Wales will suffer 46 crime per year at average cost of £160 per incident • Business crime generates 22% of all Metropolitan police activity:- includes retail/night time policing; investigations & custody / prosecution costs. • 80% of offences are committed by just 10% of known offenders • Reducing policing resources means everyone must work smarter; Business communities need to unite and ‘self help’ and engage more. • Business Crime Reduction Partnerships (BCRP) are present in over 300 towns and cities throughout the UK and operate within an agreed template, codes of practice & operating protocols contained within the national accreditation scheme ‘The Safer Business Award’. • Areas operating a BCRP in the UK enjoy an average reduction in ‘business crime’ of 45%.

BCRP's:- the Business Community response • BCRP's:- • are business led cooperatives, traders working together & with local Police, Local Authority & others to reduce crime in the trading environment. • establish working relationships with partners and become a strong voice for business. • operate communications networks that share information & maintain regular contact with each and every member & other partners to ensure quality information flow. • can & should be ‘victim support option for business community including referrals from partners; centre of excellence in business crime prevention advice and support. • take incident reports, maintain intelligence database, identify & tackle persistent and prolific offenders head on; manage a banning notice scheme; distribute intelligence reports, identify trends, send out alerts and advice appropriately to membership. • deliver training packages, hosts meetings and events, lead & participate in business crime prevention campaigns. • establish relationships with local community provision e.g. education, community groups, youth and faith groups who want to contribute to community safety. • establish regional annual award schemes to encourage & recognise contribution.

Lewisham Safer Business • LBBAC Ltd. is a business - by business - for business; a not for profit cooperative that is governed by its own Board & members - for the benefit of members, their staff and customers • Nationally accredited BCRP working in the London Borough of Lewisham currently managing Safer Lewisham Business - Safer Sydenham Business & Safer Deptford Business schemes. • Structure:- private limited company with a Board of Directors (3), Board of Management (BoM) drawn from members -responsible for day to day management -answerable to Steering Group (SG) with independent Chair, consisting of (no more than 10) Directors, members & partner organisations meeting quarterly to advise, consult & review performance. • Membership is open to ANY business trading in the borough of Lewisham. Membership may be approved by the Board of Management after consultation with partners.
