  2. Who are Adfam? • Our mission: improve the quality of life for families affected by drug and alcohol use. • Direct services in 3 prisons • Influence policy • Projects • Signposting • Training • Publications and resources • Supporting and developing networks and capacity

  3. Overview • Nearly 1.5 million adults significantly affected by a relative’s drug use • 250,000 children of problematic drug users • 1 million children affected by parental alcohol misuse

  4. How are families affected? • Lack of information • Financial • Criminal activity • Emotional • Physical • Stigma • Isolation • The cost of harms family members experience is about 1.8 billion per year

  5. Why is it your concern? • Substance users primarily rely on their families for support: they are your co-workers • Addiction is contextual and recovery has to be as well • They need help to make sure their support is effective • They were there before the addiction and they will be there after the addiction • The support they provide would cost the NHS and LA’s about £750 million to provide

  6. What can you do? • Give information • Explore family relationships with the substance user • Referral and partnership working • Acknowledge and respect family members • Minimise the vulnerability of family members • Have guidelines for engaging with family members, and training and support for staff • Consider the whole family
