2. Coal & Black Gold (Crude oil) • Coal is: Is a solid but brittle. Carbonaceous black sedimentary rock that burns. It is made up of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and lesser amounts of sulfur and other trace elements. Coal is divided into four Classes: lignite, subbituminous, bituminous, and anthracite. Of the commonly minable coals, anthracite is the hardest and has the most carbon, giving it a higher heat value. • Black Gold (Crude Oil): In the past, black oil and white oil product term has been used to simply differentiate between products that can give more value than crude or not. So happened that most if not all black colored products have less value that crude, hence the term Black Oil was used to make this differentiation. Black Oil product is simply defined as many refined product that is having less economic value than crude oil per unit (must use equivalent unit) price.

The energy in coal comes from the energy stored by plants that lived hundreds of millions of years ago, when the Earth was partly covered with swampy forests. • Black Gold: Coal is a nonrenewable energy source because it takes millions of years to create.
