American Pikas • The American Pika’s scientific name isOchotona Prineps. • It’s classification • Kingdom- Animalia . • Phylum -Chorclate. • Class -Mammalia. • Ochotonidae.
Do you know what the American Pika looks like?..( don’t look at the picture first ) The American Pika is about 6 to 10 inches long. They weigh about 6 to 14.There long gray or brown on there backs. And a white stomachs. They have no visible tail. The look like a visible tail. They look almost like an guinea pig with huge ears.
The American Pika get away from it’s predators by… • Running, • Walking fast, • Or even burrowing. Pikas can be very fast when they need to be.
Herbivore vs. CarnivoreWitch one could it be? . The American Pika eats grass, herbs,leaves, bark, twigs, and flowers. Now you know the answer. The American Pika is an herbivore not a carnivore . (The herbivore wins again)
Home Sweet Home • American Pikas live in the Western United States. They can find there home sweet home in many national parks. • They live in British Columbia, Oregon , Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado ,Nevada, California, and New Mexico's forests.
Adapting To there neighborhood Enemies (fun) • They have big ears so that they can hear there predators coming up behind them. They live in burrows so that they can be safe from big predators. They have also adapted to cold weather.
There life cycle and reproduction • The American Pika can live from 4 to 6 years. They mate I month before snowmelts .And may have another litter 3 months later. The babies will be weined and adult sized in 3 to 4 weeks.
Do they have behavior problems? • They have a series of constant squeaks. • They do not hibernate. • American pikas are only active by day. • They each have a colonial territory and can get frisky if that is entered by another pika is not wanted.
There defense • It is very fast so it runs and burrow away.
Help it’s… Help it’s an Ermine, a Fox, And Weasel. Over there is a Bear, a Eagle, a Hawk, a Coyote, and a Bobcat. Here come the climate change. Dig deeper. American Pikas have many enemies.
It is a survivor • The American Pika is going extinct because of how much global warming is changing the climate. It is warming faster than the years before so they are not ready yet.
What’s So special? • If it gets lower than 75 degrees the American Pika can get very sick and die if it’s not ready for the change.
Extra, extra • It does not hibernate. • I bet you didn’t know American Pika’s are closely related to rabbits. • Until early centuries American Pikas were considered rodents.
