Was Anne of Cleves as ugly as you said She was actually quite good looking No of course not, there could have been a bit of artistic licence taken by Hans Holbien, but over all she was quite a handsome girl. However, because I rushed over to where she was staying, with only a few friends, I made a surprise entrance, she was dressed in German country type clothes, and she had not good English. She did not even recognise me as we entered the hall, she shouted out “which one of you is HENRY”……………………… This did upset me. I made my entrance and was quick to get away. OK it was mean to call her a Flemish Mare but , she was not what I expected from a royal, too common. I married her, to stop her homeland becoming an enemy, but I divorced her after one month. She became my “sister” and I gave her a handsome pension and property. Look don’t think too badly of me, she never went back t her chores in Germany, she like England too much now she was wealthy.
