Hoorn • the capital of West-Friesland • about fifty minutes (by car) away from Amsterdam, Holland’s capital • a very nice city • about 69.000 inhabitants
In Hoorn • There are very nice shops and • several excellent restaurants • You can go to the theatre, which was built 2 years ago • You can visit the West-Fries museum, where you can find historical objects
History of Hoorn • Hoorn was founded 700 years ago • It was one of the most important cities of Nord Holland • Hoorn was very important for trade • You can find lots of fantastic buildings
The Stoomtrein Go with the Stoomtrein from Hoorn to Medemblik and back. You can see the gorgeous scenery. In Medemblik you can go to the ‘banketbakkersmuseum’ or play some minigolf on the nice court.
Nice cities near Hoorn • Medemblik is a about twenty minutes from Hoorn. You can get there with the Stoomtrein, by bike or by car. • Visit small, natural and typical country villages, like Opperdoes and Abbekerk
Things to do in West Friesland • Cycle around the dikes and across the beautiful countryside. See how people live in the small villages • In summer go to the Ijsselmeer and spend your day there. It's very nice natural water.
How to reach Hoorn ? • Hoorn is near to a highway, so it can be reached by car or bus. The highway goes to Amsterdam. • Hoorn could also be reached by train. The train system reaches for Amsterdam as well.
Facilities for inhabitants and tourists • Sail on the Ijsselmeer • 5 soccer clubs, athletics, ice-skating court, table-tennis, 4 tennis clubs, etc. • nice pubs, cafeterias and restaurants • nice and pleasant shops in the city centre
Dutch food • Holland is Americanized McDonald's, hamburgers,etc. • We eat a lot of potatoes • We like foreign recipes Italian, Greek or Asian food • There are a lot of places where you can buy snacks • Try the van Ree Snack Bar the chips are delicious there
Dutch cheese • Dutch cheese is very famous • many types of Dutch cheese are sold abroad • Edam is a real cheese city and it’s near Hoorn
Dutch water • In Holland there’s a lot of water: the sea, rivers and lakes. • The Northzee, the Waddenzee, and Ijsselmeer are in Holland • Rivers in Holland: the Rhine, the Maas and the Waal.
The Dutch and ships • As there’s a lot of water in Holland, we do a lot on water. • The Dutch like sailing • Hoorn has a pretty large harbor • Hoorn is a perfect city to make a boat tour on the Ijsselmeer
Dutch soccer • There are many famous Dutch soccer players: Robben, van Nistelrooy, Kuyt, van Persie and Bouhlarouz • Some of the best players in the world: Cruijff, van Basten, Rijkaard, Gullit, Koeman and Kluivert

Ice-skating • Holland can be rather icy in winter • The Dutch like ice-skating • Ice-skating is one of the most frequently watched sports on TV in winter • The Dutch are ruling the ice-skating world together with the US, Norway and Italy.
Tennis in Holland • We like tennis a lot, but we don’t have really good players like Rafa Nadal or Roger Federer. • In Hoorn there are a lot of tennis courts. • We used to have quite good players like Richard Krajicek and Sjeng Schalken
Dutch Stereotypes • There’s a lot of water • There are windmills • Most people are blonde • They wear a special kind of shoes called: klompen (we don’t do that in reality) • They produce Dutch cheese
