  3. Bard – Sham Rage • Decorticated cats exhibit extreme and unfocused aggressive responses • Hypothalamus must be intact • Papez proposed emotional circuit – limbic system, that includes hypothalamus

  4. Kluver-Bucy Syndrome • Rare cerebral neurological disorder • Major symptoms - urge to put objects into mouth, memory loss, extreme sexual behavior, placidity, visual distractibility. • Bilateral temporal lobes – damaged amygdala

  5. Facial Expressions • Microexpressions – brief facial expressions that reveal true feelings often break through false ones • Duchenne Smile

  6. Facial Feedback Hypothesis • Pull your eyebrows down and together • Raise your upper eyelids and tighten your lower eyelids • Narrow your lips and press them together • Hold for a few seconds…

  7. Fear Conditioning • Medial geniculate nucleus • Amygdala • Periaqueductal Gray – defensive responses • Lateral hypothalamus – sympathetic responses • Hippocampus - Contextual fear conditioning
