  2. Artist Defined Movement • Constructivism in the general sense describes abstract, geometric works of art which are constructed, or organized, from distinct components and contemporary materials • Artists felt that art and technology could transform society for the better

  6. Naum GaboKinetic Construction (Standing Wave) • 1920 • Metal wood and electric motor • This is a moving sculpture • As it moves it gives the impression of a solid, curving shape, but is a strip of metal only • As a sculpture, this piece exists only when it’s moving

  7. Alexander CalderAntennae with Red and Blue Dots • 1960 • Aluminum and steel wire • Calder’s suspended wire sculptures were called ‘mobiles’ by Marcel Duchamp because of their movement • Calder built toys as a boy and his sculpture retain a playful quality and echo shapes found in nature
