  1. Fizz Quiz Observations

  2. Review Questions • How can you make a solution? • How do you know if a mixture is a solution? • What does solubility refer to?

  3. Chemicals • Citric Acid (C6H8O7) • Sodium Bicarbonate (NaHCO3) • Calcium Chloride (CaCl2)

  4. Do you think these three chemicals will make solutions with water? • How can we find out?

  5. Sodium Bicarbonate • Is not as soluble as calcium chloride, citric acid, sodium chloride • What can we do to make get the rest to dissolve?

  6. Calcium Chloride • As it is dissolving, the cup is getting warm. • Exothermic reactions release heat.

  7. Procedure • Label cups: 1, 2, 3. • Measure one 5 mL spoon of chemical & place in the labeled cup. Cup 1: calcium chloride & baking soda Cup 2: calcium chloride & citric acid Cup 3: baking soda & citric acid • To one cup at a time, add 50 mL of water to each cup and stir. • Observe and record observations on Fizz Quiz Observation page.

  8. Clean Up 1. Save Cup 1’s solution!! Pour other solutions down sink drain. 2. Remove labels, rinse cups & sticks in basin. 3. Clean table. 4. Sit down and be ready to discuss observations.

  9. Observations • What happened? • Did the mixtures of chemicals form solutions when they were mixed with water? • Cup 1? • Cup 2? • Cup 3?

  10. Precipitate • An insoluble material that forms during a chemical reaction Calcium chloride + baking soda + H20 Chemical Reaction  calcium carbonate + CO2 + ?

  11. What is the precipitate? • calcium carbonate CaCO3 • Chalk

  12. Chemical Equation CaCl2 + NaHCO3 + H20  calcium carbonate + CO2 + ?

  13. How can we separate the calcium carbonate from the liquid?

  14. Do you think the liquid that came through the filter is a solution? • How can we find out?

  15. Review Did a chemical reaction take place in cup 1? How do you know?

  16. Review Did a chemical reaction take place in cup 1? How do you know? Did a chemical reaction take place in cup 2? How do you know? D

  17. Review Did a chemical reaction take place in cup 1? How do you know? Did a chemical reaction take place in cup 2? How do you know? Did a chemical reaction take place in cup 3? How do you know?

  18. Review Did a chemical reaction take place in cup 1? How do you know? Did a chemical reaction take place in cup 2? How do you know? Did a chemical reaction take place in cup 3? How do you know? What new materials formed?

  19. Vocabulary • Chemical Reaction – occurs when two or more materials are mixed together and there is a change in the composition of the materials. The new material has different properties than the original materials. • Precipitate – a solid material that forms as a product of a reaction.

  20. Questions • What happens when a solution is made with water and two different solutes? • How do you know when a chemical reaction has occurred?
