Objectives • To reveal the seriousness of sin. • To increase our understanding and appreciation of how the Gospel of Christ addresses the problem of sin. • To emphasize that the Gospel of Christ cannot truly be preached without preaching repentance. • To assist the church to clearly identify true repentance. • To enable the church to effectively communicate what the Bible teaches about Repentance.

The Problem of Sin • Mankind under a universal curse of sin • Rom 5:12 • Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned. • Rom 3:23 • For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God • Rom 6:23 • For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
The Definition of Sin • Sin is any want of conformity unto, or transgression of, any law of God given as a rule to the reasonable creature. • Anything that contradicts God’s character of holiness. • May be against God’s person (godlessness, defilement of self) or it might be against God’s laws or moral government (transgression, rebellion, or lawlessness). • A transgression of the law • I John 3:4 • Galatians 3:24 • Hebrews 11:32-40 • Matthew 27:50-53
The Definition of Sin • Missing of a mark or aim. • Romans 3:23 • Overpassing or trespassing of a line • Fallen where one should have stood upright. • Galatians 6:1 • 1 Timothy 2:14 • Failure to do what you know to be right • James 4:17 • Iniquity, godlessness, wickedness, unbelief, unrighteousness, unjustness and ungodliness. • Leviticus 26:40, 1 Peter 4:8, Proverbs 11:31, Romans 11:20, 1 John 1:9, Deuteronomy 25:16 and 2 Timothy 2:16.
The Penalty of Sin • Penalty – pain or loss which is unswervingly inflicted by the lawgiver • Natural consequences of sin • Death (Romans 6:23; Ezekiel 18:20; Hebrews 9:27) • Ungodliness results in mental and spiritual deterioration. • Wrath of God (Matthew 25:31-33; Revelations 22:12; 11:16-18 • The bible clearly teaches that there is a pending judgement to come upon all those who would live ungodly
The Penalty of Sin • For the Christian, death is no longer the penalty for sin • Ephesians 2:7 • Eternal Death – culmination and completion of spiritual death, and speaks of eternal separation of the soul from God; called the Second Death. • Revelations 21:8 • II Thessalonians 1:9 • Matthew 25:41 • John 5:28-29
The Definition of Repentance • Repentance has to do with turning away from sin. • The scriptures teach that a person must repent from sin as a part of the process to receiving salvation. • Root meaning • A change of mind or purpose. • A “sincere and thorough changing of the mind and disposition in regards to sin.” • Involves a change of view, a change of feeling, and a change of purpose. • It contains three elements: the intellectual, the emotional, and the voluntary.
Repentance: The Intellectual element • Involves a change of view … with regard to sin, God, and self. • Recognized not merely as weakness, an unfortunate happening, or a mistake, but as a personal guilt • Psalms 51:3 • Recognized as transgression against God, from a human viewpoint. • Psalms 51:4 • Recognized as that which defiles and pollutes self. • Psalms 51:7 • Job 42:5-6
Repentance: The Emotional element • Godly sorrow for sin • 2 Corinthians 7:9-10 • Jesus confirmed this in His teaching of the publican’s prayer. • Luke 18:13-14 • How much emotion is required in true repentance? • There must be evidence of emotion of the heart being stirred when one is brought to face his sinful deeds • Can we distinguish between true sorrow for sin and the mere feeling of shame because sin is discovered?
Repentance: The Voluntary element • Voluntary inward turning of the whole heart to God and away from sin. • Luke 15:18,20 • When a person truly repents it will result in Confession • Psalms 38:18 • Luke 15:21 • Forsaking of sin • Proverbs 28:13 • Isaiah 55:7 • Turning to God • 1 Thessalonians 1:9 • Acts 26:18
The Importance of Repentance • The Old Testament • Deuteronomy 30:10 • II Kings 17:13 • Ezekiel 14:6 • Ezekiel 18:30 • 2 Chronicles 7:14 • The New Testament • John the Baptist – Matthew 3:1-2 • Jesus – Matthew 4:17 • The great commission is about repentance and remission of sin – Luke 24:47 • Peter– Acts 2:38; 3:19; 5:31; 8:22; and 11:18 • Paul– Acts 26:20; 2Corinthians 12:21; 2Timothy 2:25 • The commandment of the Lord – Acts 17:30 • Without repentance, the result will be eternal death • Luke 13:3
How is Repentance produced? • Considered a gift from God • Acts 11:18 • In relation to the unsaved • It is through believing God’s word • Jonah 3:5-6 • Through the preaching of the Gospel • Matthew 12:41; Acts 2:38 • Through the goodness of God • 2 Peter 3:9 • Through Godly sorrow • 2 Corinthians 7:9-10
How is Repentance produced? • In relation to the saved • When God reproves His people. • Revelations 3:19 • Hebrews 12:6 • Hebrews 12:10-11 • He may choose to use a vision. • Job 42:5-6 • He may choose to use a fellow brother. • 2 Timothy 2:24-26 • It leads to: • Confession of sin (Luke 18:13) • Restitution for wrong doing (Luke 19:8)

Signs of Repentance • Reference: 2 Corinthians 7:11 • Diligence (carefulness) • Earnestness, zeal, something with haste accompanying it. Being quick to do what is right • Clearing of yourselves • To clear oneself of blame, quickly stop doing what is wrong, or to quickly respond to the offer of forgiveness if one realizes that they are guilty of sin. • Indignation • Involves a sort of anger, hatred of sin
Signs of Repentance • Fear • Not wanting the sin to be repeated • Vehement Desire • Speaks to a fervent wish, especially to be right in the sight of God. • Zeal: • Eagerness and ardent interest in pursuit of God and to turn from sin. • Vindication (revenge) • Readiness to see justice done; wanting to do the right thing.
In closing… • Repentance is not something that a person can bring about by himself • If any man ever has the urge to repent and turn from sin he should be encouraged to do so. • Repentance is can only be possible through • Preaching of the Gospel • Believing God’s word • Godly sorrow • Goodness of God.
