Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance. 7And it came to pass after these things that his master’s wife cast longing eyes on Joseph, and she said, “Lie with me.” 8But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Look, my master does not know what is with me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand.
9There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” 10So it was, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he did not heed her, to lie with her or to be with her.
11But it happened about this time, when Joseph went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the house was inside, 12that she caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me.” But he left his garment in her hand, and fled and ran outside. (Genesis 39)
Running From Sin! When temptation comes we can either excuse our sins or we can run!
Deadly Sin • The wages of sin – Romans 6:23
23For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6)
Deadly Sin • The wages of sin – Romans 6:23 • Dead in trespasses – Ephesians 2:4-5
4But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), (Ephesians 2)
Deadly Sin • The wages of sin – Romans 6:23 • Dead in trespasses – Ephesians 2:4-5 • Willful sin? – Hebrews 10:26-27
26For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. (Hebrews 10)
Deadly Sin • The wages of sin – Romans 6:23 • Dead in trespasses – Ephesians 2:4-5 • Willful sin? – Hebrews 10:26-27 • Have not sinned? – I John 1:8-10
8If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. (I John 1)
Deadly Sin • The wages of sin is death • Dead in trespasses • Willful sin? No more sacrifice • Have not sinned? Liars!
Temptation • Lust & pride – I John 2:15-17
15Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. (I John 2)
Temptation • Lust & pride – I John 2:15-17 • Common to man – I Corinthians 10:13
13No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. (I Corinthians 10)
Temptation • Lust & pride – I John 2:15-17 • Common to man – I Corinthians 10:13 • Not from God – James 1:13
13Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. (James 1)
Temptation • Lust & pride – I John 2:15-17 • Common to man – I Corinthians 10:13 • Not from God – James 1:13 • Tempted by Satan – I Corinthians 7:3-5
3Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband. 4 The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. And likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does.
5Do not deprive one another except with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again so that Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. (I Corinthians 7)
Temptation • Lust & pride – I John 2:15-17 • Common to man – I Corinthians 10:13 • Not from God – James 1:13 • Tempted by Satan – I Corinthians 7:3-5 • Not a sin to be tempted – Heb. 4:14-16
14Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.
15For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Hebrews 4)
Temptation • Lust & pride – I John 2:15-17 • Common to man – I Corinthians 10:13 • Not from God – James 1:13 • Tempted by Satan – I Corinthians 7:3-5 • Not a sin to be tempted – Heb. 4:14-16 • Sin when we give in – James 1:14-15
14But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. (James 1)
Temptation • Tempted by lust & pride • These are common to man • Temptation is not from God • Tempted by Satan • Not a sin to be tempted • We sin when we give in
When Temptation Comes • Run – Genesis 39:11-12
11But it happened about this time, when Joseph went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the house was inside, 12that she caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me.” But he left his garment in her hand, and fled and ran outside. (Genesis 39)
When Temptation Comes • Run – Genesis 39:11-12 • Flee – 2 Timothy 2:22-23

11Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, 12having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation. (I Peter 2)
When Temptation Comes • Run – Genesis 39:11-12 • Flee – 2 Timothy 2:22-23 • Resist – James 4:7-8; I Peter 5:8-9 • Abstain – I Peter 2:11-12 • And pray – I Thessalonians 5:16-22
16Rejoice always, 17pray without ceasing,18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19Do not quench the Spirit. 20Do not despise prophecies. 21Test all things; hold fast what is good. 22Abstain from every form of evil. (I Thessalonians 5)
When Temptation Comes • Run • Flee • Resist • Abstain • And pray
More and more the world tries to influence us to tolerate and even excuse sin. But sin is deadly, causing us to die spiritually, and ultimately be separated from God forever unless we trust in the blood of Jesus to save us.
When temptation comes, run, flee, abstain, resist! Don’t allow yourself to give in to the wiles of the devil. Have you come to Jesus through faith & obedience to be washed from your sins? He invites you to come now!
